Djed Spence

I’m probably in a minority and though I like him it might be a good time to sell. He’s been here several years and been decent but not anything special. If he stays then it would appear he’s back-up for Porro - given that we brought in Robertson (who I didn’t particularly want) for left back cover. We’ll never get a better price for him and we could use the funds to improve the starting lineup further up the field.
Over the years we have all seen players peak at the World Cup and then move to clubs only to belly flop.

He seemed to have been wound up properly, perhaps by the England camp to get very achieve.

He had brilliant moments in games but equally some defending positions taken with some poor footballing decisions. He’s not the only one guilty of this by the way before everyone piles in … this is the Djed Spence thread

If we were to get rid I think we need cover still, so only makes sense if we improve at RB and get an upgrade there for Spence

Maybe he will want to test himself as a starter rather than warming the bench. I would say that his stock possibly will be over inflated at the moment. We would need to get a suitable understudy.

Yes in fairness, Tuchel and the England environment seems to have brought out the best in him.

In fairness he has also been good for us but not been able to get a head of steam 1 given the manager merrygo round and 2 because he has been filling in on two roles rather than having a long run at one
But he did that for England too (2 roles) over the course of the past few weeks. I can’t help feeling that he’s a highlights player rather than a steady consistent one, and tournament football might suit him better.

In a steady environment though and one in which he is clearly being trusted (look at the reaction from those around him).

Spurs has been anything but a stable environment for anyone over the past 2/3 years IMO

He is clearly a very talented footballer and one who I personally think will benefit and grow from playing regular football, that might not be here, but he has tons of ability

that tackle was a VDV special, looked amazing, but only happened because of a monumental fudge up in positioning in the first place

you don't get credit for a recovery tackle when you failed to close the passing lane to start with imo

Not Spences fault. Ball is given away and we get counterd on which is a natural part of football. Guehi, who I think was terrible all tournement tbh, is wildly out of position along with James which forces Spence to have commit. I don’t think it’s a case of him backing his pace as others have said either. He has no choice but to try and close down the Argentine with the ball and then does amazingly well to recover.

Spot on.

Agree re: Guehi, and am I the only person who finds James utterly underwhelming and a liability?

Other way for me. I think Guehi has been found out. Overrated for me and not international level.

James is perhaps a victim of injuries but unless someone else comes along is surely Walker's replacement in the England side. I reckon he's incredibly tough to play against. He defends hard and he keeps coming at you. However, how much time does he play patched up and less than 100%?

Cards on the table, I like Spence and want us to keep him.

Methinks if we actually cash in on Spence now that Inter are sniffing around after his brilliant World Cup and replace him with Neco Williams, it utterly demolishes the logic of our left-back situation.

Williams is highly energetic and genuinely comfortable playing on both the right and left flanks. By signing him, he instantly becomes the primary depth for both Porro and Udogie. That immediately makes keeping Ben Davies and signing Andrew Robertson laughably redundant, leaving us with three left-backs fighting for scraps behind Udogie. Keeping Davies for squad registration while paying Robertson's wages is an unnecessary
expense.

By this logic there is no reason to keep Spence.

He is a top player on his day but clearly was not fit.
A fully-fit Reece James is a top-5 RB in the world. Incredibly difficult to play against.

I think the biggest weakness in the England team was consistently at CB. I wasn’t impressed with either Guehi or Konsa in any game. And Rice, while obviously absolutely knackered all tournament, repeatedly showed the limitations in his passing game.

If Rice grew up in the Med he would be a CB. Same as Eric Dier who moves back to England and becomes a CM.

I do feel for Tuchel in a sense because he never got to play what he views as his best XI due to the fitness of James & Saka. His primary strategy pre tournement was those 2 putting in quality deliveries from the right flank. Henderson would have almost certainly come on and been the voice on the pitch at 1-0 up with 5 mins to go yesterday and he gets injured in a freak situation. But that's ultimately where his squad selection let him down.
He knew James struggled with fitness issues as was Livramento but there was no alternative at RB aside from players of a completely different profile of player in Quansah, Chalobah, Konsa & Spence. He knew Saka was struggling going in and he only brought Madueke as his back up who is again a different profile of player.

Trent should have been in the squad. Not ideal for every game but he could have a positive impact when needed.
Bowen should have gone over Maduke because he at least brings some quality to the right wing that Madueke clearly does not offer.

This is the kind of thing he could learn from and you chalk up as 1st tournament error. The subs against Argentina are not though.
