So Djed Spence in defence seems to have a ring to it according to our podcasters. Some also believe Djed plays LB better than he does RB.
I must admit, I don't have the answers but every time I watch him I get even more intrigued about the player. Dare I say it, but there's a bit of Dele about him.
Last night I saw some shocking LB play. Bad positional play in key moments. Bad decision making in key moments almost resulting in goals. Overplaying and losing possession because predictably he comes onto that right foot and the opposition shut him down and turn over possession.
On the flip side, I thought he was our best midfielder. He wasn't selected there but his touch, close control and running at pace with the ball opened up play and left their midfielders the wrong side of play. He then was able to pick a short or long pass and stretch play even further.
It just got me asking the question about how do we use him best. I can almost see him playing as a right sided centre half in a back 3 with license to create havoc going forward. I could also see him playing in a midfield 3 ands being on the ball a lot. I also think as the right channel player in a 4-2-3-1. If he can cross like he can pass then that could be a winner.
Frank should first and foremost get him focusing on improving his defending. He needs to care much less about conceding corners. It goes with the territory of being a defender. Just ask Danso. He needs to care less about keeping possession and clear his lines with the ball in the air where he needs to. Slight adjustments that makes him a "safer" and more dependable defender.
Not knocking the guy, but do believe more needs unlocking with Spence.
