Unfortunate for the lad - just never can put a run of games together, and is now firmly in the 'injury-prone' category. :(

Just makes an LB in January the priority, but we've known that for a while.

Having a left-sided player down that side makes a world of difference to our buildup, though admittedly Djed really made that flank his own against Brentford. But typically he'll always cut back on his stronger foot, making him predictable - so we really need someone there who can run that flank the way Porro runs his.

Funnily enough, Sporting Lisbon have a player like that available - Maxi Araujo, who I understand is basically Porro but on the left.

I like Porro but I don't think we can afford the luxury of another one of him on the left hand side too, we need someone who is defensively more capable/reliable if Porro is on the right.

Totally agree about the balance with a left footer at LB, makes such a difference and this needs to be addressed ASAP....

Udogie and Porro and then can rotate that with Spence on the right and a more attacking LB.

For sure, but I think we can solve that by playing Djed on the right a bit more. Would also let us give Porro a break - guy has played by far the most minutes of our entire outfield squad these past 12 months, or so it seems.

Not really disagreeing with the general point about balance, but Spence is a pretty attacking FB, as we saw at the weekend, it’s just he’s a very good 1v1 defender as well. I think playing on the right Spence’s attacking numbers would look better.
Well, weirdly enough, I actually think he looks *less* effective on the right, on his favoured side.

Granted we've had a very small size of games to draw from, but when played on the right, he typically looks less assured than on the left. No idea why - just one of Djed's quirks, I suppose. :p

I've actually thought that and can't really figure out why. To me he hasn't looked that good going forward on the right, but the sample size is a lot smaller of him playing on that side.

As a right footed winger with a very limited left foot, I always enjoyed much more playing on the left - not even for coming inside to shoot, I just found it easier there dribbling with the ball for some reason. Maybe he's just genuinely better on that side, but should be worth him getting more games on the right before coming to any real conclusions....

For sure mate - no idea how the brains of you outfielders work. I was, and am, a goalie - my role is limited to yelling at you all for not covering me enough. ;)

Yea I think we’ve barely seen him play there for us, so if you have that perception then it could be down to the quality of opposition or how we were playing as a team ourselves. Can’t say I’ve noticed any difference playing for us myself though?

I watched him a lot at Forest and he was excellent going forward as a kid from RB.

For sure mate. We've had a small sample size, and also, he rarely *starts* on the right - more frequently, he shuffles over late in games when Porro has to be brought off. So fatigue, opponents, game-state, etc. are all factors that could be skewing this.

But as for why I think this - it's just by watching him when he's on the right. Defensively he seems a bit less certain about when to mark and when to stand off, and offensively he can't get past players as easily as he can on the left.

As well as getting another LB/left sided defenbder and/or a left sided winger, do we need to think about selling next summer?

Could it be the physical exertions of the PL are simply too much for him at this stage?

Id say Spence is a bit more balanced. Porro tends to go forward more and get caught out of position, Spence gets forward but generally reads the defensive side of the game a lot better than Porro.

Can Spence find Porro's intensity levels from the first whistle though. Porro has a massive character that should not be underestimated.

Well, if he's injured a lot, weirdly enough, it might make him a good rotation option for left-back as long as we get somebody else in.

We got lucky with Davies - it's rare that a player as consistent as him is happy with being our backup option on the left/at left-centre back, for almost the entirety of his 11 year career here.

More broadly, if you have two fit left backs who are both quality, one will push to move eventually if he doesn't get minutes. But if he's only fit for, say, half the games, then that is less of an issue because he'll play when fit and be rotated out when he isn't. It spreads gametime more evenly across the two left-backs, and if you have a centre-back who can also cover out there (which we do in VdV), we're set. Especially since Djed can also play there if needed.

Of course, in an ideal world you would have two fit left-backs and that would be the end of it. But just saying, squad planning may not always work that way - more often, you have to make the best of what's available.

We need another left back because we have nowhere near enough left footers in the squad
It’s painfully and to see at times and makes us one sided …and it’s not a frank issue but I hope he pushes the club
