Davinson Sanchez

What he gives us is that when we play a very high line ( which we do a lot ) he can cover the runner in behind. At the moment though he is the only one that can. if they put it in behind Verts and Davies then we
are usually in trouble. Would like to see more pace on the left side really.

Little Sanchez highlight reel

Wow. That clip really brings out how accomplished and consistent he is at both intercepting and simultaneously clearing the danger with an outball. It's bang-bang every time, and so elegantly too. Virtually nothing gets past him.

Still learning, still susceptible to the odd brainfart but already composed way beyond his years.

Hard to believe he's not on his way to becoming the world's best defender.

Thought the same when I saw it. As good a shot as it was Id have been really tinkled had Lloris let that in.

It was right down the middle, not sure there are any excuses really.
My instinct is to agree with this but I do think it was just a wicked shot, the keeper should be a few yards off his line there to cover more of the target area and the dip was so extreme / unexpected I think it would have beaten most. It looked terrible for the keeper though as he was on his knees.

It was a wicked shot, but its a bit like getting beaten at the near post - as good as the attack might be you really expect your keeper to deal with it.

It was Caballero though, so its hardly a surprise!

Likewise sometimes when the keeper is beat at the near post it really is unstoppable (rocket to the top corner) and again the instinct is to blame the keeper rather than take your hat off that the specific shot is the exception to the rule.

I get that, but I dont think theres ever a situation where you say "100% the keeper cant be faulted" in those situations.

As above, had that been at the other end I think many would have been very fairly asking questions of Lloris.

Davidson has a lot to learn.

Precise pitch position and body position in particular...you will get caught out in this league.

His qualities are many but reacting to situations once they've happened is putting you a step behind and against the best.... they're gone.

Up the awareness and reading of the game and the qualities he already has will make him invincible.

Jan has really been the master of knowing what's about to happen before it happens recently and I'm hoping he can mentor DS as much as Poch has to.

At 21 he has done brilliant and will get better and better

Not sure anyone expected him to be playing every game this season but he is and he is learning on the job

He was caught out yesterday and he will know that... big learning curve for him

But I’d rather him learn it in that game than in one that mattered like Saturdays

I thought there were a few occasions last night where he recovered well from a mistake and did a good job winning the ball back or blocking out the City player. Of course it's preferable that he isn't making those mistakes in the first place, especially when they do lead directly to a goal, and last night was certainly far from one of his better games. But he has also put in some very strong performances over the season, enough to believe there's very, very good player developing there.
I wish things hadn't gone pear-shaped with Toby. Sanchez having Verts alongside him is great, obviously, but the ideal scenario was when Sanchez was playing alongside both Toby and Vertonghen - what better guidance and example could any young CB ask for. With Toby out injured for so long, and now seemingly out of favour, Sanchez has had to take on more responsibility and any errors (understandable given age, lack of PL experience) are all the more highlighted. Nonetheless, for all his poor play last night, he was left quite exposed at times. With a bit more support/cover from those around him (Verts excluded, obviously), maybe he wouldn't be picking up quite so much flak. All players have bad games and areas where they can do better. It will all be good experience for him, and from what Poch has said about him and his desire to learn and improve, he will take it all on board.

I thought it was a mixed bag of a performance rather than an outright bad game from him tbh

We seemed to have a massive hole in the middle of the pitch in front of him for a lot of the game but he should have been a lot quicker to anticipate and intercpet the balls played through

We were constantly over loaded until they took the 2 goal cushion

Unfortunately, he was very poor yesterday. He made a lot of mistakes. He had been criticized by other teams' fans as I have a lot of them as friends as I am an overseas supporter. I have usually defended him but yesterday was simply an embarrassing performance. He is young, he has a lot to learn and gain. He is one of the young defenders with great prospects.I hope he can overcome this match but I don't want him as first option next season.

What has being “criticized by other teams' fans” got to do with it? Anyway.

He will be one of our first choice defenders for the foreseeable future of that I’m extremely confident.
He is very young and will improve and learn. Dont worry too much!
