Superb player possibly the best in his generation no question.
You can't knock his dedication to England, but I'm looking at his performances in the big games in the latter stages of tournaments and I don't think he did anything to stand out from the rest of our players.
 Amazes me that people get so emotional when talking about him.
Fergie got rid of him because the sideshow that his associated fame created.
Would people honestly say he's an England legend based on the fact that the furthest he got in a tournament was the quarter finals?
Never rated Beckham. If he looked like Luke Chadwick then his career would be at the same level as Luke Chadwick's. He will be remembered, not for being a footballer, but for being a celebrity footballer.
He was at the forefront of modern football, totally dictated by money. Bought by Madrid, LA Galaxy and PSG to sell shirts and nothing more
Absolute puerile tosh.
Pettiness and irrational, media driven hatred (jealousy?) throughout a lot of these threads. We, as a club, would have died to have someone of his ability, dedication and drive over the last 2 decades. Not the most naturally talented but he as sure as damn made the most of the very good ability he did have. So he made what he could on the back of it. Fair play to him. Nothing every other footballer tries to do and lots of other z list nobodies as well. At least he put in the miles at the same time and didn't ask for or expect a free ride.
Give the guy a generous good bye. He has earned it.
Anyone who doesn't like him/doesn't think he is brilliant is jealous. Complete fallacy. You could use that arguement for hundreds of footballers, people don't like Ronaldo; they're jealous. People don't like Michael Owen; they are jealous. He's made a lot of money through his football ability, but also hugely because of his looks, good luck to him, I don't begrudge him for that in the slightest.
There is absolutely no doubt he is a great ambassador not only the game, but for our country. But ever since the fallout from the 98 World Cup, he's become teflon in some people's eyes. I mean he made minimal impact for PSG, made 1 start, and people are acting like he played a big part in them winning the title. Call me cynical, but I believe PSG mainly got him for merchandising reasons. The evidence is in the fact that they hardly played him.
If you want to give him credit for winning trophies with United and Madrid, fair enough, he deserves praise for his performances at those clubs, but I have no idea why people bring up his MLS title when discussing him, would anyone really care if Frank Lampard or Ibrahimovic won the MLS title?
My main point is that players such as Linekar, Gazza, Shearer, Owen, Beardsley and Platt to name a few made bigger impacts for England in tournaments, but those players aren't idolised anywhere near as much. I honestly wouldn't put him in the top 15 or so England players of all time because I don't think he contributed enough to warrant it.
Scholes is the answer. Was a very good player, not the greatest, but he made it happen for himself. He's got to get credit for that.
On a related note, bbc running a 'who was greater Beckham, Owen or Scholes.' The fudge is Owen doing anywhere near the other two.
