Daniel Levy - Former Chairman

Has built the club up on some solid foundations with the training ground and ground and a strong set of commercial levels. All that is needed to compete these days. Hopefully those taking us forward can build on those solid foundations. You do wonder if the project of setting that in place has now finished that the Lewis family thought the club needed someone to kick it on to the next level.

For me, he was a brilliant chairman who turned this club around on and off the pitch given what he inherited in 2001. Okay, the on pitch didn’t get to where we’d have all loved but, objectively, we’re streets ahead of where we were for a long time before ENIC.

I see where you’re coming from, but I don’t think we need to be too worried about sustainability going out the window just because Daniel steps down. I think the fact is he was probably so much on the conservative end, so much thinking about the long term, that we can click the dial along slightly and it will give us plenty of room to take a bit more risk without putting the future of the club in doubt.

I also think that other clubs will take more risks now, and to operate as we were would mean we fall behind. Equally, I think the combination of stricter PSR enforcement and 5 CL places means that we are well placed to take advantage of our stable foundations and exploit clubs that have gone too far the other way on risk taking. But because there’s 5 spots, more clubs are going to be willing to speculate too to get there. And we need to keep pace.

I think it’s an exciting time. Not because Daniel is leaving (I think he deserves to stay in some sort of ceremonial role if he wanted to) but because the club has reached the point whereby to take the next step, it would require big moves. And I feel like the club in general understands that and wants to keep progressing. I’m really excited about that.

I would have been happy for Daniel to lead that charge if he wanted to, but I think so often in business, in coaching, and in general people are suited to doing one thing exceptionally well. I think we’ve benefitted from going through the phase where we leverage Daniel’s exceptional strengths. And the next phase we need different exceptional strengths. It’s very unlikely that people are exceptional at so many different modes of operating, so I’m ok with this change.

Not that simple mate. You're totally right that I disliked many things about how he ran the club. I also respected some things about it. But I was in a bad place generally and let too much of that negativity take over in the way I talked about the guy. Negativity that also affected how I viewed the club that is such a huge part of my life.

I regret some of it, and I hope I don't return to that space. For now I'd prefer to acknowledge his positives and the things he did well, instead of harp on about the negatives like I did for nigh on a decade.

Thanks mate - genuinely, thank you for the empathy. Like I said, even when we were arguing, you were my supports that I relied on in dark times - and I'll always be grateful to you and others for it. :)
 
Strange feeling after hearing the news. I’m no fan of Levy but part of me really wanted us to be successful with him in charge. I believe he genuinely had the clubs best long term interest in mind with his decisions, despite how many I disagreed with.

Interesting that this was the first summer with a restructure at board level and he’s stepped aside. Perhaps his ego couldn’t take being challenged more directly?

To sum up my feelings overall - Thanks for the good times, you’re also to blame for the bad times

I’ve said that I think something needed to change at the club if we were going to continue to progress. There were too many other clubs investing and innovating in their own strategies to move forward. I think our old playbook would have kept us sustainable but left us behind. The irony is I thought this summer we really did make a step change. We competed for proven players against other top sides, and got the deals done.

I think this is an exciting new era for the club. But I really do think it’s tough to put into words what an incredible feat, what an awesome job Daniel did for 25 years.

I am hugely grateful for all he's done for the club I love and pleased he got to see us lift a significant trophy before he went
I'm sorry to see him go, but I hope this is the right time. His line to Gary Neville recently about not being appreciated until after he's gone now takes on a new aspect.

I do believe history will be kind to him, the legacy he's established for our club will prove strong, and the online tantrum-throwers and abuse hurlers will mainly end up like so much chaff in the wind.
 
All I know is, if there is an apocalypse tomorrow I will be standing next to Ben Davies. Our Best team of the prem era, now gone. Our best player in recent times, and academy product, in Kane gone. Our best imported player in Sonny, gone. Our best Chairman I think personally at least, now gone after 25 years. Whole board has been replaced, every member of playing and coaching staff has gone…yet Ben Davies remains lol :)

On a serious note though, what a chairman who with the constraints set by Enic via Lewis, has done more then I think people will realise.
 
He tried to do football the right way financially, and it probably didn't pay off on the pitch, but he did a cracking job on the business side. He certainly made some mistakes, but he gave us the Poch era where we should have won more if he backed Poch a lil more. But we also went close quite a few times.

I think we do need a sugar daddy or oil baron to get us over the line and get us the 3 or 4 top class players to go into the starting XI.

Nothing really changes. We've not been sold so will still be sustainable.

Fans will have to find someone else to blame though for not getting the player they want in the transfer window or a manager being sacked.

Whatever way you look at his tenure at the club. Football as a whole is going to be worse off. He was one of the strongest voices for it to be sustainable. It might have been tinkling in the wind but am sure the state of the game would be worse if not for him.
 
I haven’t read the posts in the thread, but isn’t it strange that Levy is stepping down with immediate effect? Nothing happened during the last match; the only thing I noticed was that Levy left his seat a bit early at halftime. It doesn’t feel like a departure made with love, but more like a signal that he doesn’t want to be part of something. To me, it seems like Enic has decided to sell the club, and he’s stepping down before becouse he disagrees with the decision.

History will for sure be kind to him. He’ll be a caricatured figure to people who don’t really get it. But to look at where our club was when he came in, to where it is now, and the foundations he has set for where it can go now…it’s one of the best sporting achievements I can think of.

Would we have had such a big restructure with in the club just before looking to sell?

Seems strange to me, but who knows.
