He just won the golden boot at the WC if I remember correctly
He really was top bracket thoughI was just kid when we signed Klinsmann so didn't really know him from Adam just thar he came with a big reputation- but when I've checked out his career on Wiki it doesn't really standout as though he was a top bracket striker tbh
Yes, it's a mess.Is it a mess?
I don’t get that
Was itStoichkov in 94 wasn't it?
With transfers?Yes, it's a mess.
Look at our record over the last year.
Salenko? Ended up at rangers and was a flop. Was it
Along with the Russian guy who scored most in one game?
Thought it was Jurgen but that was a role ago
He was oustanding though
Yeah that was the guySalenko? Ended up at rangers and was a flop.
He really was and he was a World Cup winner. You also have to consider the context. When we signed Klinsmann, top foreign players didn't play in England. They played in Spain and Italy.I was just kid when we signed Klinsmann so didn't really know him from Adam just thar he came with a big reputation- but when I've checked out his career on Wiki it doesn't really standout as though he was a top bracket striker tbh
That will never happen if fans emotional needs are not met ie trophies. It's as simple as that.Personally, I think the fan narrative of Spurs "not spending enough" will die down when they see the accumulation of multi-year spending in this post stadium era. Spurs spend absolutely loads of money on transfers and salaries.

Sugar wasn't a great chairman for us on the whole but that really was a case of "To Dare is to Do" along with, to a lesser extent, the signings of Dumitrescu and Popescu. VDV may have been in same ballpark but all the stories I hear about it suggest it was opportunistic whereas Sugar went out and got Klinsmann.

Madrid bought (or acquired) Mbappé when they didn’t really need him. Not going well apparently.who now buys at the top ?
I don’t think anyone does now
What everyone wants is the 22 year old who has 3/4 seasons behind them and 150 games in the top level
I think there is a dearth of superstars to buy
Wirtz is the next big mover but he is at a big club and would be joining someone bigger
United have been kinda buying rejects and they were the epitome of buying the proven ones with the developing ones under fergie
Madrid have stopped buying Galacticos

Rebrov and especially Soldadao bloody wasn't. I actually followed La Liga heavily at the time, at no point was Soldadao rated or considered the same level of player as a Klinsmann, that is total gas. Likewise Rebrov was the creative one in the Shevenchnko partnership but no way was he ever considered one of Europe's elite, it was thought he might make it but he was not that calibre of player. Your memory is playing tricks with you. Berbatov was a good player but one who wasn't considered decisive enough again, not a player that was considered top class before we signed him. Van Der Vaart I'll give you but only in reputation not his performances at the time before he joined us, he hadn't lived up to his early promise. He was a player who had had lean seasons in both Italy and France, and had some injury issues.
I’m sure other clubs passed on him before we got there.
VDV definitely in the ball park, and as I said earlier, Rebrov and Soldado too. Berbatov would be another example.
City, Real, Barca etc. top of the market doesn't mean 28 years old. It just means the players who are considered at the top of the game and most desired. Real are still going for those players ie. Camavinga, Tchouaméni, Mbappe etc.who now buys at the top ?

I don't care about numbers, we are talking about their talent and their status. I agree with you Klinsmann was considered a bit past it absolutely and that helped us get him, but as a player, career and status wise he was worlds apart from Rebrov, Soldadao and Berbatov before we bought them.Look at the numbers for all of them in the three seasons prior to their signing.
But more than that, at the time Klinsmann was considered maybe past his best, he was in his 30's, injuries were becoming more prevalent. He was then what maybe Son is now.
Na, not having that. Don't bother about stats. Klinsmann was considered a world star at the time. Anyone who watched football knew who he was and had seen him play because he'd done it at the very, very highest level. He was a World Cup winner and had been successful in the toughest (particularly for attacking players) and best league in the world at the time.Look at the numbers for all of them in the three seasons prior to their signing.
