Mark Cavendish says his career could be at an end following Sunday's one-day Gent-Wevelgem classics race.
The 35-year-old has struggled for form in recent seasons, suffering from the Epstein-Barr virus.
He spent much of Sunday's race in Belgium in the breakaway, showing his best form for some time, but finished 74th, more than six minutes down on winner Mads Pedersen.
"That was perhaps the last race of my career," a tearful Cavendish said.
The Isle of Man rider, who is due to compete at the Scheldeprijs one-day race in Belgium and the Netherlands on 14 October, is considered one of the greatest riders in road cycling, having won 30 stages at the Tour de France.
The Bahrain-McLaren rider also won the 2011 World Road Race Championships, 15 stages of the Giro d'Italia and the Milan-San Remo 'monument' one-day race in 2009.
Cavendish is contracted until the end of 2020, but is in talks with his team to extend.

An emotional man who perhaps at times was to emotional. He has talked about the depression he has suffered and the toll it took on his career. Seeing Kittel last year commentating on the tour and how relaxed he looked. Maybe cav should give it up and move on.
Of note would be the struggles Gavira has had since beating cav, same as kittel really. True in cycling as it is in any sport but I dont think you can stay at the very top for more then a few years.
Some of cavs sprints were so epic they actually live in the memory. I have two photos on my wall in my man cave (box room) one of gazza going loopy scoring that free kick against arsenal in the semi final and one of me with my arm round the shoulder of cav before the team time trial stage in Nice 2013.
My favourite sporting memory will probably always be seeing Wiggins and Cavendish at the 6 day in London. My wife and son were with me as it was my birthday and they finally got why I love cycling. The music the lights the atmosphere was carnival like and everyone just cheered all the riders. But when Wiggins did a sling shot for cav to sprint and win on the last lap the roof nearly came off, the noise was deafening and the concourse was actually moving.
So if this is the end. Cav your a star and I love you. I know he loves his motorcycles and is friends with a pro motorcyclist from when he lived in Florence,so I hope he achieves his dream of racing in the aisle of man thing they have.

It’s on the shelf beside my bed. I tend not to read anything but the papers during term time - too tired and too busy. I’ve got four or five books I have waiting to be read over the half term holiday and it’s top of the pile. Looking forward to it. Cool cover.

Stunning and I'm predicting he does not go to the tour next year but aims for the double giro and vuelta.
Ineos are rebuilding a fantastic team. Suddenly looking very strong again what with ritchie porte coming in. Could not believe how strong Dennis was looking, thought he would put his feet up in this time trial but no he went for it.
Can you imagine a team time trial with Gana, Thomas, Dennis and Porte. Would be insane, Yates as well as Bernal for GC. Actually would be mean 3 or 4 GC winners in one team if Thomas does stay.
So yep I think geogharn hart should go for giro and vuelta next year.
Hugh Carthy second at the moment in the vuelta and Jamie knox was looking good in the giro this year so a possible future stage winner on mountain stages.
Then the is the awesome talent of tom pidrooster to come through.
Wish we had a future road sprinter to come through as cav retires at some point, to keep an interest in the flat stages.
