Cycling thread

thats true, there's an asthma caveat to that though, he wasn't the only one let off the hook for salbutamol and its a far cry from the transfusion program at Postal

Indurain tested positive just like Contador.

The issue in cycling and the way its run is someone like Indurain and Armstrong get there's covered up.
And the likes of Schleck and Contador test positive after tinkling off Bruyneel.

Good find. That obviously helped those big lungs of his.

Those beta-2 blockers used to be used by a lot of athletes. It was not unusual for a quarter or third of swimming and athletics squads to be on medication for asthma.

Its not much of a find if you know your cycling. Indurain openly worked with Conconi, the guy credited with bring EPO to cycling. Conconi also worked with the likes of Pantani Bugno, Roche, Chiappucci and Rominger.
Armstrong's doctor Ferrari worked under Conconi at the same Italian university.

They were saying on Sky that in the 2005 TDF the first 8 all got caught using at some stage in their career, what a fudging mockery of a sport

Does that mean numer nine (whoever that was) gets the winner's medal now, seven years too late...? Cycling really is a joke sport. But at least they're making a proper effort to clean it up now, it seems. Maybe in 20 years time most competitors will be clean.

Edit: Literally as I write this, Steffen Kjærgaard, one of Norway's best cyclists for the past two decades, admits he's been using drugs as well. Kjærgaard was in Armstrong's team for the 2000 and 2001 TDF.

Cycling is great for amateurs, I don;t diminish the pleasure millions of men across the UK now get from it and it's fantastic for fitness and the implications for having a healthy country.

But the professional sport is a complete joke and i'll be tuning out thanks.

Unfortunately that includes Kenny and Hoy......nothing is sacred and we would be hugely naive to think they aren't doping. In my heart I believe they are clean, but who knows anymore?

If Davids, Stam, Ferdinand, Guardiola and De Boer were in cyclist not footballers theyd be known as drug cheats.
We all now Fuentes working with Barcelona in the 90s. And what was Agricola doing at Juve?

We also know Messi received growth hormone treatment from Barcelona. Some will argue that it was treatment of a medical condition, but it wasn't a necessary treatment. One can't really pretend that the prime motivation wasn't to make his body better suited to being a footballer.

Aren't there rumours that the reason why the real Ronaldo's knees were so shot, was because all the growth injections weakened his joints.

I guess it's a bit different (from Messi's perspective) when a young teenager has this treatment compared to a full-grown adult. But hey ho

Agree. However, its a fine line when its an optional procedure for something that is not a medical requirement. Perhaps its more akin to cosmetic surgery. I certainly don't blame Messi or his family for taking the opportunity, but there can be no doubt of Barcelona's motivation

P.S. On Ronaldo, I thought the speculation was that all the extra muscle mass from steroids or growth hormone put extra strain on his joints. His breakdown before the World Cup final also raised suspicions that he was on something.

An interesting link is Pedro Leon, the Real player (well on loan at Getafe but still a Real player). His older brother is Luis León Sánchez well known pro cyclist who was recently outed as a Client of Armstrong's doctor Ferrari.
I can see lots of stuff coming out about other sports in the Padua investigation into doping currently happening in Italy.
Personally I reckon Cycling is currently a cleaner sport than Tennis.
There huge unasked questions about Nadal. And how exactly did Djokovic suddenly turn into a 5 set endurance specialist.

Apart from the unfairness to the clean competitors, all these scandals make one suspicious of any great performance and spoil the spectacle. Instead of awe we ask "what are you on?" (thanks Lance and Nike for that one).

We look for excuses as to why the performance was special: Indurain's large lung capacity, Armstrong's recovery from cancer and rebuilding his body specifically for cycling, Nadal's family history of muscular physiques, the attention to every detail however small by the British cycling team under Brailsford, etc. We see the flamboyant cloths and fingernails of Flo-Jo rather than the manly legs, the yellow eyes of Ben Johnson rather than ... , we see the unusual size of Marion Jones and Usain Bolt as representing a new paradigm in the sport.

Some we already know are frauds, some we realise we should have noticed, others we still hold out hope for genuine greatness. We watch the early deaths of some sporting icons, Flo-Jo or Walter Payton, and hold our tongues as a sign of respect for the dead. We watch kidney transplants become a part of professional basketball and ...

And still we look for sporting heroes. Are we just naive or is the continued hope a sign of our resilience and desire for achievement? If we let the drug cheats spoil our enjoyment of sport and special performance, we will lose a little part of ourselves.

Yeah - football and cycling are JUST the same!!
