Cristian Romero

Not just a Romero point

You watch teams like Arsenal and they take absolute pride in how they defend and stopping teams, I just don't think we care about defending as much as we should do and top teams do.

Which may explain us switching off
I think we lack any leadership in our first choice defence, that’s a the issue
Three times today our players didn’t take a ball first time and delap just took it off them on the bounce. Weak and poor

Even with VdV we so often leave ourselves over loaded at the back. Maybe one of the coaches can remind Ange of his is the English Prem, not the Scottish one.

There were times today there were as many as 4 players trying to stop a lone Ipswich attacker and nobody could get near him. We are really, really bad at defending, both as a team and individually.

It’s not a tactical issue that means one physical striker can make a defence weak at the knees like we saw today
The first goal came when we had 7 players in our area and not one took charge

I am just beyond baffled at how nobody gets mad enough to just stop an attack. And I think it's they can't be naffed. When utd let vdv run the entire pitch.....I would have been fuming if that was us.
And when bent slide tackle and missed, nobody else seemed to do anything about the goal that was incoming

I just have no answer to the fact that this continues to happen in every decade, different squads, managers.
And I'm even resigning myself that the Ange era ends the same way. Would still give him next season just cos it's different to what we normally do

Can’t keep going on these suicidal high presses without Cheatmode playing to cover that vast space he leaves behind, or a Rodri level CMF who will slot in until he can get back into position.

It's a dangerous situation already no matter what Romero does. Three players bearing down on Porro and Romero with two of theirs with Dragusin and Udogie.

Looking at that still (bit difficult with a still and haven't watched it back) how does Romero end up being the one tracking the Ipswich player after stepping up? We're in trouble, clear as day. Both Kulusevski and Bentancur are right there and should be doing their utmost to get back when Romero steps up. You don't have to be Rodri to realise that we're in massive trouble and they need to get back asap.

I think part of the issue is that Bentancur still isn't experienced in this role and neither is Kulusevski.

agree. when players have to scramble back at top speed because we lack numbers at the back - its very inefficient use of resources on the pitch.
ange claims he has one style but i think he needs to have variations on a theme when playing different teams i.e. better in game management.
but will he? we will need a team of 33 players for ange if we intend to compete in europe.

also the physical-technical aspect of the game is missing. where you understand the rules and use it in your favour e.g. getting fouls or giving it without getting a yellow card. not just goalkeeping but all over the pitch, we look like amateurs getting bullied by pros. this i believe has got to do with his contract coaches and a lack of a unified approach to the game.

Agreed. Imo poor for the overhead kick goal too. So many players almost closing down before the cross instead of actually closing down properly.

I think fatigue (physical and mental) is part of the reason. Not an excuse, but a reason. We're not always as poor at defending in these situations, often we're actually really good at it. But when our intensity drops we struggle.

It’s a spurs way
We even had examples under Poch

Kulusevski was on the edge of Ipswich’s area a few seconds before this, after Sarr started off a counter-attack which ended when Son squared the ball halfway between Johnson and Solanke. Bentancur then attempted a slide tackle on Hutchinson who shrugged him off

At which point Romero decides that the best form of defence is attack and attempts to put pressure on Hutchinson which leaves Porro with both Davis and Szmodics to deal with. Neither Kulusevski nor Bentancur seem able to muster up anything more than a stroll back towards our goal, don’t know whether it’s physical or mental fatigue but either way it left Dragusin utterly up the creek.

Thanks for screenshotting a bit more.

Not sure if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing with me.

I guess my point is that whatever Romero does in that situation we're in real trouble. I can see an argument for being more passive as a CB in this situation, but I can also see an argument for being more aggressive.

I don't think there is a clear answer, but like players playing to their strengths. That's what Romero does here.

He needs to stop going to the ball unless he has a high chance of winning it
Again, it’s the same with crosses
He is like ball magnet and must go to it
Against Villa in the first half there was moment when Drago was about to clear a ball in and cuti ran in to clear it himself with no need to

When I look at all of those photos I see one glaringly obvious problem. Ange's midfield tactics.

Romero wouldn't even need to be on that stupid press if Ange allowed Spurs to have a proper number 6. In all cases, all 3 of our midfielders are hopelessly ahead of play. In Sarr's case, he just ball watching on all 3 in no man's land.

Said this more times than I care to remember, but you can't have all 3 of your centre mids on the high press. It takes just one pass and you're one on one at the back, or even overloaded.

What's also noticeable how one good pass can easily overload our full-backs.

There is a reason why Romero is a world cup winner for country, but can look a liability for club. It's not just the player himself.

It was the press which is how we won the ball for the attack
The killer was sons woeful pass putting everyone everyone out of play
It’s 100% not on the player, but the player decides when to be aggressive or not
We need him to lead that defence and manageit

Yes, these situations happen from time to time when we lose the ball and get countered on.

I don't think it's been a big problem this season, but it will happen from time to time. As it does with everyone.

It’s a very tricky situation but I’m thinking more along the same lines as Bedford tbh, that Romero should realise he’s never getting to Hutchinson before he can lay it off so should drop back with Dragusin to give Bentancur and Kulusevski a chance to get back and help.

Although after opting for that high press Romero still had the opportunity to track Szmodics but for some reason slows down his run on the edge of the area which means his lunge is then too late to cut out the cross.

Only cost is two goals so far which is great considering
But the crosses not being dealt with are killing us

I think he slows down because he is injured still
He only played through it so he could represent his country this week

In Sarr’s defence he’d just sprinted up the other end of the pitch to create a good chance which Son squandered and what with the amount of minutes he’s being forced to play lately he’s probably running on fumes.

Kulusevski did a better job of tracking back but we certainly could do with a better defensive shield than Bentancur who’s sadly not been a one man midfield army since the cruciate plus ankle injuries whilst Bissouma remains inconsistent and the gaffer don’t seem to trust Gray in that position as yet.
