Shielding or lack of was part of the problem. But the GOV following a policy of herd immunity early on was much bigger part. As was many other errors and procrastinations

I just can't see us easing lockdown and then going back in, companies just won't survive, I doubt mine will TBH for example.

I believe the answer is to release from the lockdown but protecting what we know, the old and the vulnerable (As unpopular as some find that). Its the only way to use the data we know and find a way out of this that isn't waiting for a Vaccine

I've often found it interesting how things that are seen as generous at their outset can so quickly become taken for granted. The new minimum.

I suspect the government will come to regret it's actions on furlough...

I don't think its al to do with furlough, plenty of people working still abusing the rules because ultimately its a choice of stay in or go out, people still have plenty of time at the weekends and bank holidays to do this which is when it seems to be happening.

Is that your analysis or have you got anything to back that up? There are numerous reasons that the numbers are high it is multi layered, lack of test and trace, lack of PPE, taking too long to determine qualitative signs such as loss of taste and smell, overcrowding in London, but overall the lockdown has saved lives. It’s contribution to direct covid deaths will be minimal.

Where I do agree is that we need to slowly come out of this mess. But wishing it to happen is not the way to go. You have to put in the right measures. I just don’t see that happening fast enough. Also local public health professionals who could make a real difference are being side stepped by central government.

Apparently the govt will publish the new R rate (from 3 weeks ago) and some new scientific guidance on schools reopening. I've got 2 kids who could return before September. Keen to see the science. I am fortunate enough that I don't need to send them back at all other than the fact I think it would be good for my year 6 son to spend his last few weeks in primary with his friends. Let's see what they say.

I also see China is adopting that Churchillian maxim to "never let a good crisis go to waste". Hong Kong's one country, two systems status is looking like another COVID victim.
 
Ha, ha the fudging Tories are now caught in a bind of their own making. They couldn't dump all those nice middle class Tory voting unemployed on the dole, as it was, as everyone knows you can't live on that. So they came up with the furlough scheme. "We can't upset our voting base can we." Shows the hypocritical nature of these arseholes though doesn't it. How they have two sets of standards for the British people. Now , some of the more hard core bean counters in the party are saying "how are we going to pay for it going forward?" I say give them all a taste of the welfare state under austerity. You know, a good ole Tory short, sharp shock! Put the lot of them on the dole.

After seeing what our eldest kids primary school are doing in terms of measures we're happy for the 11 year old to go back from June 1st
She will be in her bubble of 10 from the playground right throughout the 2.5 hours she is going to be taught for, it's 3 days a week too
Also kids of key workers will be taught totally independent too
She leaves to go to secondary school soon and even seeing her friends from possibly afar for a few weeks before the summer break will help her mental health massively, especially as she is going to a different school to the large majority of her friends
We're happy that she will observe social distancing as will her friends

Our youngest though is at nursery, she is in her last few months before starting primary school but we won't be sending her back to nursery straight away
It's a small nursery and she is in a class of up to 40 kids across 2 big rooms and a garden, the nursery have said they will limit that class to a maximum of 30
That's too many for us as no way will 4 year olds have a clue about social distancing
We will possibly try to get her back before she leaves in August for a few sessions so that she can have some social interaction with other kids as we feel the 6 month gap between lockdown starting and her starting school in September is too much

But it's been a tough set of decisions for us as a family

I was more referring to the furlough scheme itself than it's potential side effects. I was surprised by a) the degree of it's original generosity, and b) the extension over the summer. With fears of a second (winter) wave, was end-October really a sensible time to pencil in it's end? I would've thought a marked tapering over the summer months would have been the way to go for a number of reasons, and my concern is that the longer you allow so-called emergency, 'temporary' measures to stay in place, the more difficult they become to ultimately unwind.

My main point of frustration is the utter clams leaving litter all over the place. Snipers post at the beach to kneecap anyone who leaves the brick they've brought to the beach with them sounds good to me. I go walking in a pretty large and beautiful park in Birmingham (yes it's not a mirage, google sutton park) and frequently bump in to some litter picking couples, upon first seeing them I made sure to say thanks for what they're doing as it's nice to see humans doing good hearted things not just for financial gain or social media acclaim but now I just feel annoyed about the reprobates who are not capable of keeping hold of some rubbish until they get to the next bin.

I'm not in favour of capitial punishment but so I'm not saying to assassinate the selfish masses but at least rubber pellets will provide swift justice and would see people taking some responsibility quickly. We've got a population of teenagers trained up on Call of Duty that'd be very keen to fulfil this duty, as long as everything is recorded there shouldn't be issues. Don't give me that "we've got kids and we're too busy" flimflam either, if you've birthed these horrible little bricks, get them to start cleaning up after themselves you clams.

I know this isn't going to be the most profound post on this thread but I have no idea about the stats / political bias / workings or mutations of the virus, it seems like none of us do but fudge the litterers need some life lessons dished out.
