Coentrao is an exciting player, a real threat down the left flank, i'm not sure he's a great defender though
In fairness I think his defensive weakness is a bit overstated. The few times I've seen him play (maybe a half dozen times that I can recall) he's not been all that terrible in defence. What is noticeable though, is that he was clearly been asked to play
very high up the pitch (I can't imagine he consistently ignored instructions in that regard, so assume it was how he was told to play) which means he did get caught out of position occasionally. But seriously, if the manager is asking him to play essentially as a left-winger then I don't believe you can fault him for being "out of position". 9 times out of 10 he was in exactly the position he was supposed to be.
So assuming AVB asks him to be a bit more restrained, then I don't see why that side of his game won't improve, because when he
is in position, he's as good as anyone at sticking to his man, closing down and not getting turned. He works hard and as much as I like Assou-Ekotto, Coentrao would be a genuine upgrade. I'm more excited about this guy than any other of our summer signings simply because - to be honest - I didn't know enough about any of the others to know whether they'll live up the hype or not. But Coentrao I've seen enough to know that he is actually a class act.
We all know YouTube vids are worse than rose-tinted specs, and this one has probably already been posted, but it's actually not far off being a fair representation of the player as I remember him (for most of the video you'd think it was a compilation for an attacking winger)
