maybe he's worse than I remember then as I can't recall that much of an impact ;-)

he had a 1/4 ratio as well, which doesn't compare well to Rooney's 1/2 (whom you suggested wasn't a great United forward previously in the thread, who also has played wider and deeper a lot of the time)

As I said earlier he only played the striker role for his first five seasons they bought Cantona in and McClair dropped into M/F. During those first five seasons he scored 101 goals in 260 matches.

sorry, still not convinced, he always seemed to be the one with whom the move would break down, the guy who would miss an easy chance, Hughes was the class act, then Cantona of course

I recall his efforts in a Scotland shirt as well
 
I never really rated Hughes. Thought he was one of these strikers who didn't have any real strengths.

Cole (arguably Man U were more successful with him up front, though I never personally rated him)
Sheringham (just longevity letting him down)
RVP (ditto)
Tevez (ditto x2)

I think thats a bit harsh, he was hard working, quick, and a reliable finisher.

I wouldn't rate him higher than Rooney though.

things would have been different, he'd have had to have worked within our means, it's impossible to gauge how we would perform under him

I don't think I've ever known a player who can blow to such different degrees of hot and cold for such long periods of time as Wayne Rooney. Sometimes I literally think the aliens from Space Jam have got to him at times, and it's literally a lot of the things that make him a good player when in form (first touch, reading of the game, finishing ability, strength and speed) become some of his biggest weaknesses. He gets so easily distracted by off the field issues and I don't think he looks after his body as much as a top athlete should.

But let's not forget why he is such a big name player. When he's on form he's one of the best forwards in the country. This is a man who has broken the 25 league goals in a season barrier twice, and not just from scoring tap-ins and penalties. If he recovers his best form in the second half of the season then United are guaranteed to finish top 3 minimum with an outside shot at the title.

He was class last night, maybe that's the start...
