Christian Benteke

We already do that with the CM we have now.
If we do what we are trying to do correctly we won't.

Playing two up front as anything other than a hail Mary is really bad against anything but the most departed of managers (Villa will be fine) .

We will not be strong enough in CM as long as we use Mason and Bentalb as our two, as for two up front Kane will be better used playing in the hole and coming from deep where ( imo) his strengths will be better used.

I'm not the only one who doesn't see the point of this signing am I??

If we didn't have a ready made #9 then I'd say so, but Kane is our first choice #9 and a signing like Martial who can play as a wide forward as well as up front is the kind of signing we need. Benteke needs starts and so does Kane, but a 442 for me isn't the way.

SORRY it was "spOrsofficial" that announced "we are delighted to announce" etc.

wakners!

That's a personnel problem, not a formation one.

Gaps in the middle against most modern teams because you're playing an outdated 442 is a formation one. The only real answer is to find a few £B to ensure you are always the better team, no matter how bad your formation.

They wouldn't need to, they could just walk through the gaps in midfield we'd be leaving.

Don't buy that one bit.. Are you telling me that we cannot play with Kane and Benteke upfront against the likes of WBA, Bournemouth, Norwich etc, without retaining solidity?

The only "gaps in midfield we'd be leaving" will be those available on the counterattack if we play the Masaleb combo because - while they have some magnificent offensive qualities - neither of them has the mindset of a defensive midfielder and therefore are instinctively inadequate to spot those gaps and position themselves to close them. Ergo, a proper DM who can do that job.

The other major threat from these smash and grab teams are set pieces - where Benteke would be as good as having an additional centre half.

As I said earlier playing Kane in the hole behind Benteke does not mean we are playing a 4-4-2 formation.

Could not agree more (this is becoming a disturbing regularity, recently )

This "we cannot carry 2 strikers" only assumes that the only thing those two would be doing is waiting to score.

It was a regular event to see Kane tracking back and tackling an opponent near our corner flag or to see Benteke in Villa's half closing space when they lost possession.

With two options moving around up front, we would force mid/lower table teams to defend deeper since they would know they would susceptible to the long ball; this in turn would allowing more space in midfield and more possession. Also one less midfielder would hopefully avoid the ridiculous situations we often saw last season where our midfield five were squeezed in a sixpense between half way and the penalty box with barely any room for effective maneuvering.

Barca carry not two but three strikers and they didn't do too badly, did they? It's not the number of strikers but having good midfielders, especially a Busquets/Matic type DM, to make sure the system works. Strikers score goals; goals win matches!!

We won't buy Benteke for 32mil. Even though I think he would an exceptional signing for us, it's too much for him really. However 32mil is just his release clause and probably not his transfer fee when it comes down to it. And even though I would love to see him at the lane we are not going to push the boat out that far. If a deal is to be made it will be for a fee in and around the early 20mil mark with maybe Ade going the other way and a loan or two to sweeten the deal.

Would prefer Martial and Austin for that crazy 32m on Benteke.. at least Lukaku is now fully out the picture.
I don't think Austin is the one we should be chasing. My recollection of Austin's season was that he was great at the start of the season but tailed off into averageness as the season went on. Would that be a fair assessment?

Kane also tailed off, as did Berahino

Well I'm not sold on Berahino either but saying Kane's season tailed off is stretching the point a bit. Kane season was consistently good except for a lean spell after the English match.

Maybe I'm being harsh on Austin but that is my fuzzy recollection of how it went for him (which could be wrong).

Kane had an exceptional season, of course way better than Austin or Berahino, but yes after the England game he a struggled a little. Instead of a goal a game record, he was 1 in 2 ;)

yeah i was stretching the point a bit

Id take Berahino instead of Benteke, different players i know but i think Berahino will fit in better with Poch's style of play and he has the ability to score goals out of nothing

Today's rumours mention a part-swap with Townsend....

20mill + Townsend should not break our bank, especially if we get 8 - 10 mill for Soldado. Maybe Tim would also take Ade into the bargain???;)
