Christian Benteke

He was a perfect fit in pretty much every way. We're building a powerful, direct, beastly but uncreative side so what do we do? We buy a striker who has been used to playing in a technically gifted and highly creative side. None of Soldado's goals came from outside the area, he relies completely on the supply he gets, Benteke on the otherhand you can go direct to and he'll make things happen by himself. Soldado would've been a better fit for Chelsea where he can finish off the chances Oscar, Mata and Hazard create for him. Benteke's only 22, already has a highly productive season under his belt in the Premier League, knows some of the players at our club, speaks English. Soldado's 28, has never played in England and we've just spent £26m on him, if we don't finish in the top 4 this season we've pretty much just frittered away a load of money to finish in the same position we're used to finishing in.

Think back to all of those home games where we created jack brick for 90 minutes. Soldado's not going to make a difference, Benteke is a handful for defenders and he'd have given us a platform to build off. I really can see Soldado struggling for goals if we don't sign any inventive/creative players soon.

I'd wait till the squad re-engineering is done at the close of the window before issuing those bleak pronouncements on how well we can put Soldado into the team and create scoring chances for him.
He's no panic buy and AVB will be more aware than any of us about how he plays and what he needs to succeed.

Your analysis may have been right if Soldado was transposed into last season's team in place of Ade or JD.
This coming year, we shall see a different shape, a different persona. A new beast

Actually I remember teams parking the bus, us making 3 or 4 chances a half and JD/Ade/whoever fluffing the chance more often than us creating Jack brick

And I also recall seeing Bale/Dembele/Holtby/Siggy/Lennon making runs, looking up and not seeing a striker making any space or runs (striker usually behind them)

Benteke is a far more of a risk for the money than Soldado imo, and his decision to stay at Villa (destination irrelevant) says tons about his ambition or lack of

'one season wonder' Bentekkers starts the season with just the two goals away at Arse 8-[

still have to put the pens away. if he stays fit he will get 20 league goals easy

Two fairly poor penalties.

And was he always as lazy as that? Made Berbatov in his sulky days look like Tevez.

no

think he took it easy on Arse because he is a big fan of them ;)

takes time for the big man to get going. He will be fine

Ok, cheers.

he didn't look great, but he takes a good penalty.

He didn't yesterday. The first penalty was about as bad as a penalty that isn't wide can be and he got very lucky with the rebound. The second wasn't much better and the keeper is very likely to save it if he goes the right way.

any opinions on his goal last night....lucky? miss-hit? poor defending? ;)

2 games, 3 goals...decent start for the big man

The thing with this big guy is that - even if he isnt the quickest or the most technical gifted player - he seems to strike the ball very good and are very often accurat. And with pace. And we already knew he was a physical monster.

if we have got any money left, and we are looking at a striker, id put one final 25 mill bid in for him
