"We need to be absolutely ready," Lampard told
uefa.com : "It's a cup that the club desperately wants to win. I've never won it, a lot of players in there have never won it, so we have to give it everything.
"Going up against the team with the quality of Liverpool in a final is as tense as finals can be.
"You can lose finals; they're very tough. But what you cannot do is lose it on the premise that we weren't prepared, or we didn't have that hunger or desire or everything you need to try and win a game of this magnitude.
"It's going to be one of my first competitive games as manager of this club.
"Every player in there needs to be aware of the importance of the game to this club and we have to give everything, because it's going to be tough.
"It's going to be tough, but we cannot walk off the pitch and think, 'Oh, we could've done that' or 'We missed that opportunity' or 'We weren't quite ready' or make any excuses for ourselves."
Lampard was criticised by former Blues manager Jose Mourinho for his team selection against United.
But Lampard dismissed Mourinho's criticism and said: “I don't have to be too concerned about what anyone else says, the pundits, but what is clear is the squad is the squad we've got and I believe in it.
“I can't drag people out of the medical room, whether they're experienced or not. The players we played today, and on the bech, are the players we have.
"We were missing internationals and big players, but I don't want that to be an excuse. We were competing for long periods.
“We made four mistakes and they put them away. It is a reality check for us all. It wasn't a 4-0 game for long periods, but we need to accept it."
While I never want to see Liverpool win anything, I do think a heavy defeat in the super cup for Chelsea will really set them back.
So much about a successful season is about getting off to a good start and building momentum.
And its just the same with a new manager, early games can really set the tone for his tenure.
Another heavy loss, and Chelsea and Lampard go into the Leicester game really under pressure...
