John thinks this is evidence to show local players work and that our foreign academy players usually go back home for a number of reasons e.g. socially, culturally etc.

John also thinks it is beneficial for foreign players to stay at home, play a few games in their domestic league then maybe go to the big European leagues where development and opportunities are harder to come by.

I certainly wouldn't put any of them in the same bracket as the Carlos Kicka ball type I've seen mentioned, all of them had played over a 100 games. It takes an exceptional young man to leave their home environment and family to succeed in a London club, even at a club like Woolwich where their manager had a reputation for spoting talent many have failed.

Big talent though, and quite expensive for a largely unproven teenager at the time.

There's been plenty of misses though, like that Belgian (?) kid whose name escapes me, that was supposed to be the next big thing. I also remember a kid from Norway who joined our academy a few years back. Supposedly a big talent. Now playing third tier football back home.

Basically I agree with your original sentiment. I used to get excited about signing young, foreign talent, but seeing so many fail to live up to the potential/hype, I'm far more reserved now.
 
The Belgian kid was Jonathan Blondel. The Norwegian one ...???

Steffen Iversen was a hot young striker who we signed after he gave Franco Baresi the runaround at the San Siro in the CL. He never quite reached those heights for us

What about Helder Postiga, wow what hype and expectations there when he joined

Very solid approach from us I think. In addition to that I think it sometimes hinders development to get a high profile, big money move too early.

Nothing wrong with media speculation...if you don't like it ignore it and ignore others that choose to talk about it. Simple.

We are going to miss out on players for a variety of reasons, nothing wrong with that, it happens to many clubs. All im saying is it's a shame we couldn't have brought in at least Sessegnon and Bruma this summer. And before you say that it's only the media speculation that suggests we are interested, well you could say that about every player we have actually signed and will sign as well as all the ones we havent and won't.
