I’m still annoyed that I didn’t get one when they were 15-20k, I could have taken a loan out and still been quids in. I think aesthetically the 964 is my slight favourite but I tend to towards the later models of the style I like to get the most driver aids, so my mk1 golf was actually a 91 and the 944 is 1990. The 996 and 997 are fine in their own right and might even be a better ride but I think it has to be air cooled to be a true 911. The 993 I was closest to getting was also a Targa, it’s quite a different approach to have the sliding glass rather than the physical top.

The 993s really are beautiful things. Like a fine watch. Aesthetically they are pretty sorted for me. Though more modern than the 964 (which suffer oil leaks) it is by no means a modern car. Big steps forward we’re made from 90s to naughties cars. While I love the aesthetic, I didn’t instantly fall in love with driving a 993. Maybe it would grow on me.

The earlier 911s are so elementary they are quite special to drive. No electronic aids or computers. The steering is so light when moving despite no power steering - all the weight is behind you. Lots of feedback and very visceral. I am gagging to get out in it and do some trips.

That is very, very nice.

A car thread, help needed please all...

So, am looking to bin off the old car and finally get something I want. Currently can't decide between an F-Pace or an X5. Any suggestions?

I know the X5 often comes in higher for spec and quality but it also comes with an additional £10k cost minimum for something comparable to an F-Pace (looking at the S or Sport 300 versions, want some oomph).

Few additional considerations if anyone can also help:

X5 can get 7 seats which may prove beneficial on the odd time it is needed, won't be often but nice to have
Can I squeeze someone into an F-Pace between two kids car seats?

Didn't @ShipOfGoldblum recently get an F-Pace or was it i-Pace ?

F-Pace all day long.

It looks better from every single angle (including the inside) and it's not the boring option.

That is a beauty! Love the colour too.

Potentially a silly question as I’ve mostly looked at the newer old models but what MY / edition is it as I haven’t noticed side vents like that before?

Yes I do like it, and like I said, it comes in at a better cost than X5 for high spec to high spec comparison. My main concern was space in the back, obvs it's a small SUV so decent enough but we have bambino No2 en route so still be good to fit an adult in the middle seat if ever required.

I’ve had an X5 and I’d have one again tomorrow, currently driving a Mercedes GLC but looking at Volvo’s. The XC60 T8 is smart but will probably end up with the Polestar2.

There is also the Alpha and if you can stretch then Maserati do a cracking SUV, I think it’s the best looking on the market.

Will take a look but it's proper brick looking for cars now. You can't even open one up, pop a boot, have to pre-book, basically all the fun of buying a new car has gone.

How thirsty was the X5 as heard they can drink a lot? I do really like them, but also the insurance will be more than the F-Pace too, so currently leaning towards the Jag. The mrs is also worried the size of the X5, she suggested the X3 but if I was going for that I'd rather the F-Pace I think.

The Levante is a beautiful car.

It's heavy though, and underpowered with anything less than the V8 in it. What a fudging V8 it is though.

i-Pace I think.

Yes, I-Pace. It’s fantastic in every respect but it doesn’t qualify me to say anything about F-Paces. Test drove one a while ago and it was perfectly nice as luxury SUVs powered by exploding bio-gunk with complicated gear systems go. Odd thing to want in the 2020s though.

You mean because of size/taxes etc? Want the space and don’t feel the infrastructure for full electric anywhere close to being decent. And with govt investment likely to be brick we’ll be running petrol and diesel for quite some time I think.

read some reviews just now that F-Pace infotainment system isn’t the best which concerns me a bit, spending that much money etc. Now thinking back to X5 again as front runner... welcome your thoughts all

My view is that we won't be able to have cars with proper engines much longer so I'm making sure my next few are ones I remember.

I've never owned anything with a V12 in it so I'll be taking my chance before they're banned.
