Re: Back Page tomorrow Mirror - Lewis to sell 1 Billion Tottenham
That last bit is my big concern. A leveraged buyout almost took out Liverpool, who were saved by a friendly judge who took pleasure in skewering the Texans.
I'm not enthusiastic about a sugar-daddy, but our way to regular CL football and further success has been blocked by two of them. If we were ensured they were reliable and in it for the long haul, I wouldn't mind. But ... actually quite a few buts about a potential takeover by an unknown.
But #1. We could get a Glazer/Hicks-Gillett type and the finanicial risks that entails.
But #2. We could get a Lerner/Rex Sox type. This is largely neutral but won't change where we are.
But #3. We could get a fraud like the two Sheikhs at Portsmouth.
But #4. We could get someone with a cunning plan ... like Ridsdale and Ransom at Leeds or, for that matter, Irving Scholar with us. We have just recovered and I can't remember where Leeds are.
It's also worth noting that both City and Chelsea were taken over when in a distressed state. Chelsea were at the Bates Motel and close to bankruptcy. Likewise, City had an owner who had become an international fugitive with frozen assets.
So it seems like there are two main routes. One get taken over by a chancer, get into trouble and hope the White Knight is a genuine Sheikh or football supporting oligarch, while praying it is not another fraud. Two get taken over by a pragmatic American group and stay pretty much as we are. On balance I'd prefer to stay as we are.
Apart from Chelsea (needed raise profile massively in the west to escape the fate of his mate and mentor) and City (um not 100% sure but raising the profile in the west able to assert influence with a foothold in the country.... Or just today's version of champion race horse) what other rich owners have come in to the prem recently and done well for the clubs they brought? Who would be interested that has the money and motivation of Chelsea's or city's owners? We are more likely to get a galzier type owner... But without man u's financial power or recent success that will be a disaster for us.
