Cann we claw our way back up towards a respectable league position?

lol - our GD os 33 better than 18th place. Can we call it 9 points to make ourselves feel better?
That literally made me laugh out loud.

I was trying to make a point here that most people on here can see our situation and that most people here can count to eight. In you come and tell me you get nine...

And you manage to be right about it too.

fudge off 😉
(meant in a good way, just to be clear).

No one knows what the parameters are for that. It's not exactly a well defined expression.

I actually like the description from Kompakted. "Staying up needs to be our absolute number one priority as a club."

When that is true we're in a relegation fight imo. When we rest/rotate players out in the cups because we have to get points in the league to avoid relegation. When long term planning, player development, next season, style of play - everything takes a backseat to our absolute number one priority, staying up. Then, for me, we're in a relegation fight.

Or to put it differently. If we're in a relegation fight right now surely we should rotate very heavily for the EL fixture this week. Play the kids if we have to. Getting out of the EL group stages surely isn't worth risking relegation over. Our absolute number one priority.
We are already qualified for the next stage of the EL. The dilemma is, shall we do our best to win the remaining EL games (relatively weak opponents) to avoid the additional two games in the play off round. Two extra games we could well do without.

Could you imagine getting relegated and winning the Europa league. Would we still qualify for the Champions league as a Championship team? Birmingham qualified for the Europa after getting relegated with their league cup win over Arsenal, obviously a long time a go and a different competition.

Is this our new deal or no deal offer:)

From 'no top 4 but win a trophy'
To ..'suffer relegation but win a trophy'

:)

Gonna pretend that I forgot about that...

Does going into a play off mean that you've qualified for the next stage? Are the play offs a stage or a thing in between two stages? I think these are important questions because I definitely didn't forget that we are already through to the play off.

Top8 go through. Next 16 play one another in a 2-legged play off. Presumably 9th vs 24th or whatever.

The final EL game is vital to win to free up the midweeks in Feb. We can then put that to bed for 5 weeks, giving us space and recovery time to focus on the league.

If we can get thru against Liverpool I'd not worry about the Villa game too much in the FA Cup.

Fully agreed. Good that the Villa game is after the Liverpool game. Then hopefully a breather.

Can't exactly call the Leicester game anything other than vital too. And with how exhausted we looked during and after the game yesterday that continuing run of two games a week up to the Villa game looks a bit rough.

Hopefully some minor stuff for some of those missing out yesterday.

The rest of this league season revolves around getting the four wins we need to stay up. Play the kids against Brentford and give the rest a break to recharge.

Here's our remaining fixtures and my predictions:
Leicester (H) = win ( X= loss)
Brentford (A) = loss
Man Utd (H) = draw
Ipswich (A) = win
Emirates Marketing Project (H) = loss
Bournemouth (H) = loss
Fulham (A) = loss
Chelsea (A) = loss
Southampton (H) = win
Wolves (A) = draw
Forest (H) = loss
Liverpool (A) = loss
West Ham (A) = loss
Palace (H) = win
Villa (A) = loss
Brighton (H) = draw

So 15 more points putting us on 39. I could see us getting up to 45. But can't see us above 50 points this season.
So I've updated my predictions (and i will do for the remainder of the season). First result i got wrong. Based on my predictions we are now headed for 36 points at the end of the season.

I don’t think that this squad or this manager has the gonads for a fight to stay up. I’m struggling to see where we will get any points, let alone wins. Our last relegation was the year before I was born so I’ve never seen one. It looks like I soon will, though.
