Bentley

Surely I dont need to explain his limitations away from goal scoring ? You did watch at least 1 of his 60+ games didn't you?

Yes goal scoring is a big thing, which is why he survives although his clubs dont seem to do very well.

And I said away from goals I've never seen a player contribute less (so im saying he cant play basically). But if you want to talk about goals, No, quite clearly 15-20 is not enough. Why do you think he left ? because Sunderland were too good to turn down ?

Every other player getting his amount of goals plays for a CL club and is an international star.... so you'd have to be pretty poor to get that amount of goals and not be either. You act as if the 'detriment of the team' argument is some crazy theory, but surely its the number 1 reason he left and doesnt get much international recognition ? His goals ratio at Spurs wasnt bad. If he didnt leave because Harry thought he couldnt play and wouldnt fit in the team, why did he leave ?

Ok explain to me then. What do you want from a striker? If 15-20 goals isn't enough for you what else do you want? Genuinely asking now. Bent is quick, strong and knows where the goal is don't he?

I want a striker that adds 10-20 goals to the team's total through his play, not one that scores 20, but our total remains the same.

The only argument for rating Bent is that he does the most important thing in football - puts it in the back of the net (but as it is at the expense of team formation and style I dont rate him). Never being given a fair crack is not really up for discussion when he played over 60 league games for us.

Take goal scoring away and im struggling to think of a player who has played a significant amount of games in the PL and contributes less than Bent.

To be fair to Bent, he has a great goalscoring record agains the top sides, home and away. He is the oppposite of a flat track bully.

Makes no sense Jord and no one seems to xplain why just adds that he plays to the detriment of the team. With Bale, Lennon etc he would score plenty. They would score too. Or what am I missing????

To answer the question, No I wouldn't have Bentley in the squad. Some players move to certain clubs and it just doesn't work out for them.

Nail. Head.

Football has moved on so much from the days when you could just be a poacher, bang in 20 goals a season and it was job done. You only need to look at the top scorer charts for the last few years and see how few players get over 20 goals in a season, even the top ones. The reason they get away with it is that they contribute more to the overall shape of teams, bringing others into play, creating space, stretching defenders.

The reason is that Drogba was such a beast in his prime wasn't because he'd bang in 25-30 goals (although this helped), but it was the way that he terrorised and absolutely bullied defences, which in turn helped the team to be successful.

Just my twopenneths, mind.

They wouldn't be scoring as much because Bent won't give them the same link up play Adebayor does. They'll spend the match providing chances for Bent.

On paper it would be similar to how victims were with Torres and even with him and Gerrard and a solid defence they were no more than a cup side, albeit a fairly good one, because they were so dependant on those two coming up with the goods.

Bentley gone

Tottenham midfielder David Bentley has joined Russian side FC Rostov on loan until January.

Spurs have allowed the 27-year-old to leave on loan as he is well down the pecking order at White Hart Lane.

The former Arsenal trainee, who joined Tottenham from Blackburn in a £15million deal in the summer of 2008, found first-team opportunities in short supply at White Hart Lane under then-manager Harry Redknapp over the last two campaigns and has not played for Spurs since November 2010.

Bentley had a spell on loan at West Ham last season before a serious knee injury curtailed his stay at Upton Park.

A number of clubs are thought to have expressed an interest in taking Bentley on loan, but the England international has decided to take up the opportunity to move to Russia with Rostov.

Bentley is the second new face at Rostov after former victims striker Florent Sinama Pongolle joined the club on a free transfer earlier this week.

Re: Bentley gone

Shame - always good for a laugh.
Hope he's career takes off again.

Re: Bentley gone

Good news. One of the worst signings in our recent history and he must have been on pretty big wages too. That said, I don't bear him any grudges and wish him well.

Re: Bentley gone

I can't believe he's only 27? He seems to have been around forever. We'll always have THAT goals though. And who knows, a winter in Russia may increase his work ethic?

Re: Bentley gone

I had concluded that he was happy to just pick up his wages.

This loan suggests he want to play so boosts my opinion of him.

Re: Bentley gone

150 km south-east of Donetsk, by the Sea of Azov. That's pretty far away.

Re: Bentley gone

Scoring a wondergoal vs Arsenal seems to lead to bad/below average/ultimately disappointing careers.. Bentley, Rose, Gascoigne (to an extent).......

Re: Bentley gone

From the OS:

David Bentley has joined Russian Premier League side FC Rostov on loan until January.

The midfielder has previously had loan spells with both Birmingham City and West Ham United.

Most impressive CV.
