And what about the second half of the season (i mean where did Parker's impact on our possession game go then)?
In fairness to MLK's comment Parker was injured/exhausted for quite a bit of the second half..

It didn't go anywhere. We still dominated possession even when we weren't winning games. The problem then for me was a lack of width, and cutting edge. No co-incidence that our winning ways returned the moment Lennon returned to the team hugging the touch line.
Agreed. That and also people finally paying attention to the fact that when we're in a sticky patch, Bale plays on the left!!!! I also agree with your comments re: Parker, though I do wish we hadn't overplayed him. Sandro coming in really helped us pick back up. I don't blame Parker, I lament the fact he was played too often in those last few months when he was quite obviously carrying a niggle which became a knock which became a problem...
Say we lost Modric and didnt directly replace him, what would be wrong with this ?
---------------Ade?---------------
Bale-------------------------Lennon
-------------Sigurddson-----------
----------VDV----------------------
-------------------Sandro/Parker--
Parkers fine for charging round the field putting his body on the line. What he does not contribute, not even slightly, is to a passing game.
His annoying, constrictive 1-2's put the recipient under pressure whilst achieving little else. Its not give and go, its get the ball, possibly do 17 pirouhettes going nowhere, then as a last resort run directly towards a player, normally towards our own goal and then play a straight 4 yard pass to some poor bastard.
I'm not blind to Parker's obvious benefits/talents - but to even remotely accuse him of benefitting a passing game is absolutely ludicrous and simply not true.
With the ball at his feet im not sure i've ever seen a more limited footballer (playing at such a high level).
Nothing wrong at all mate.
I'm not on board with this thing about VDV having alot of defensive responsibility in midfield. we'd get fried i think
swap him and siggy , pray that siggy has got a good engine and a great brain......then we are on the move.
You will be on board soon. It takes time, that's all, just time. AVB will play him there a few games then you'll understand the powers of VDV in CM.
Am i right in assuming you don't really rate VDV as much as most...would that be a fair assumption?
Yes. i dont think he is a bad player. i just dont think he is world class like people say that he is. he can have world class performances here and there...but for me they are rare and far between. it could be a system thing and players not carrying out their instructions o allow him to show his skills....even bergkamp looked pretty ordinary when playing with a bunch of statutes in italy.
its like that distance covered statistic...none of that means that it actually applies to rigorous hard work used intelligently off the ball when we are defending. but people see that and the natural assumption is that he runs his socks off closing people down.
also the figures two seasons ago showed that we got more points per game and score more goals when VDV did not start the game as a second striker verus when he started the game as a second striker
still he is probably the best , most talented player on our team and i would rather have him in the squad than not
I imagine his ideal central three would be Sandro-Moutinho-Sigurdsson.
