And we finished 2 points from a cl place. Oh well.
Do you think being in the CL this season would have been to any benefit to the team? Given how the season has gone and Ange has managed us with the extra EL games we might well have gotten relegated. Truthfully we weren't ready for the CL and Ange 's start was ahead of schedule.

Also to remind you Villa went into the last game of last season knowing they had already qualified, there's no guarantee if they had needed the points that they would have played so listlessly in their final PL match.

And there is no guarantee we would have got 4th place even if we had beat Emirates Marketing Project. Aston Villa were still in pole position for 4th place. Everyone points to the fact that they lost 5-0 to Palace but they had already clinched 4th and had nothing to play for.

There was no guarantee. But there was a chance of getting cl.

We were talking about not caring what others think of us or say. The only reason fans wanted us to lose against city was so that arsenal wouldn't win the league. Because many of our fans care that they would gloat.

Sorry not and never will be, a good enough reason for me. It cost us £100m and gave it to villa.

But we move on. Hopefully it turns out good and we win the europa.

Agreed re CL.
And PL he's more likely to get us relegated than towards the top.
That said, football is about winning & winning breeds winning.
Win the EL, use it to build under a new manager.
Thank Ange for his efforts and taking us away from the Jose/Conte experiment.

I think it was @Jordinho that said he wants Ange to be "the one before "the one""

Football is all about money, I may be wrong but I think since the "Champions (and placed teams) League" only 1 team outside the elite clubs has won the league, the money that and dubious owners have poured into the clubs virtually ensures their places at the top. Football like most sports is about hope, we all go or watch hoping our favourites to do well.

Scara is saying that the EL is a target we should not be aiming at, it's beneath us.
We won it in '84 and not really been close since.
That's not actually a target that's beneath us, that's a target out of our reach.
West Ham have won a trophy and mickey mouse cup, they take the mick they have won a trophy ahead of us. We need this cup just to soften the tinkle taking we get on a constant daily basis.

Because they could have won the league and we still most likely would have finished 5th. So I ask we could have helped them win the league for what exactly? How would we have benefited from that? They would have essentially won the league at our ground again. I didn’t blame people or hold it against them for wanting us to win that game, but the moral posturing from those who wanted us to win was really quite grating at the time. Now if you offered me WINNING the Europa league in exchange for them winning the CL, as much as I don’t want them to win that competition I would absolutely take it. But helping them win the title just to have an outside chance of top 4 just wasn’t worth it IMO.

More than that, it also means Champions League qualification, the equivalent of the holy-grail “4th” that everyone is obsessed with. Honestly I think those who imply the Europa is beneath us are taking the tinkle. In the last 10 years, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Man U and Sevilla have won it while Liverpool, Arsenal, Man U, Inter, Roma, Ajax, Leverkusen were among the beaten finalists.
But not good enough for us apparently and in one or two cases the sooner we lose the better to expedite Ange’s departure. Bizarre!

If you at all of my posts you'll see the polar opposite.
I was one of the earliest calling for a change - definitively from November.
But I still want to win the EL. And then say thank you Ange.
I actually think that would be ideal - he's shown he isn't an PL manager. That's for certain.
But a EL win will show he is more than just a Celtic manager.

We hired him because he has talent. A EL competitive manager is probably where he is at. And that's no shame.

EL win, Ange and THFC move in more compatible directions... Perfecto!
Fair enough. I guess I'm not that bothered about the EL, especially if the price turned out to be another season with him at the helm.

I get that. It does seem like it is some sort of "cheat mode" that you win the Europa league and then get into the Champions league though.
To make myself happy I go to Arsenal mania when we have won, and when they have lost (never the other way round) and they said on Thursday after both Utd and us got through, that neither of Utd or us deserve to be in the Champions League, which I actually kind of agree with.

If we win the EL, are we really going to win the CL? Doubtful, but stranger things have happened. However, we most certainly need to improve on our league campaign as evidence shows we dont win a lot of trophies, and should we win the EL, we probably wont win another trophy until 2042.

I get your point on whether we deserve to be in the CL, but we would at least be champions (albeit EL champions) rather than a team that finishes 4th and are therefore very far away from bring champions.

Exactly, we had also lost to Woolwich at home, Saudi Sportswashing Machine away, Liverpool away, Fulham away after that Villa win. It wasn’t the city game that made the difference

If you are that bitter and twisted that you have to spout rubbish like that you probably need to have a word with yourself. What we saw last night was 100% football in that it was aggressive, cagey, and above all it was thought out, hard fought and passionate. Each player played with their heart and head and if you think that wasn't football you're deluded.
Everything I have seen from Ange for 18 months is appalling and it has killed so much of my love for football that I don't even watch Fench and German league games.

What I saw in our away match in Germany was good players trying to salvage something from their season.

Whether a person is better or twisted is a matter of opinion. But much like politics where I don't partake because I don't like the people involved. I won't watch is again till Ange leaves.

I don’t think anyone wants to give up the Europa League to expedite Ange’s departure

Multiple things can be true at one time.
For me :
1. I would love to win the Europa League as I want us to win a trophy
2. It’s rates higher than a domestic cup because of the prize is rightly or wrongly a champions league place
3. It definitely isn’t s strong as when the above mentioned teams won it or finished runners up due to champions league dropouts not being given a second chance Something which I agree with
3. It’s definitely not as strong as when we won it given that at that time it was arguably the European competition that had the most strength in depth
4. I still think Ange should go as the body of evidence over his tenure suggests he is simply not good enough and a cup win won’t hide that. It would be a great send off for him and allows him to leave on a high

I wouldn’t disagree with any of that. On the first point there are one or 2 here who’ve given that impression but I get that it’s all a bit of fun really! On the last one it would be pretty amazing for Ange and the players to end this season by winning it. I still think the odds are against it but maybe for once things will go our way.

Slightly misleading. It's not existed as a competition of any worth for 26 years.

Should we get in via winning the EL we could say we have more right to be there as EL champions, no team who are not champions deserve to be in a "champions" league.

Who cares what Arsenal fans think. If the CL was really a Champions Leagur then they wouldn't have competed in it since 2004.

End of the day I'd rather get into the CL via the glory of wining a trophy over finishing 4th every single time.

Try telling an opposition fan that taunts you for us not winning anything in nearly 2 decades that ' yeh but we finished in the top 4 and qualified for the CL for a few yeara' .
