Well all I know is that if they win the league this season it’ll be all due to Poch and not this chancer Maresca.
The way they oaky with the ball is very good
Their defending not so good
They look like a team that has some quality and constantly fresh legs
I can’t tell so far how much is coaching but it’s great management

I don't think it's knee jerk to want Ange gone as it's not just based on yesterday's result. It's more than a seasons worth of generally poor results and some quite horrific performances with little sign of learning or improvement.

Knee jerk is West Ham fans wanting rid of Lopetegui after 12 games.

Some of us have been moaning about his style and philosophy for a very long time too.

They play two teams, one for EPL, one for cups, it gives them the ability to leverage their huge squad.

Yep
Said it yesterday
7 changes from their game on Wednesday (extra day on us)
That is a fair point and I don't think many expected us to win yesterday, I thought we'd be whacked. So I'm not overly disappointed that we lost to Chelsea even though I detest them. The worrying bit for me was how we managed the game. At 2-0, we just kept going when we should have consolidated the lead a bit and made life a bit difficult for them.

The problem with yesterday isn't the loss. It's that we are seeing the same mistakes being made in our approach, the same bad decisions being made by players, the same kamikaze approach to defending.

But I’ll say again..
What was wrong with the approach? They were kept at arm’s length generally
It was the penalty that gave them the extra lift
That’s not saying they were the better side with the ball

That is the question isn't it...

I think it's a reflection of where our ownership have brought us now, sadly. I admire and respect Ange the person, but he looks way out of his depth now and tbh we probably only ended up with him because our stock and the veneers we portrayed externally have finally been exposed...sad all round

Vicario, Forster
Porro, Spence
Romero, Dragusin
Van Der Ven, Davies
Udogie
Bentancur, Bissouma, Gray
Sarr, Bergwal
Kulusevsi, Maddison
Johnson, Odobert
Solanke, Richarlison
Son, Werner, Moore

The above squad would be absolutely fine if we were not playing European football. I suspect it would finish 5th or 6th.

With European football however, the squad is both too small and doesn't have enough experienced players in it.

I think after two or three more transfer windows we'll be getting close to the size and experience level of squad we need to play both PL and EL/CL football.

23 players. With devine, phillips, han, vuskovic, dorrington, donley... on loan.

We can buy in jan aswell.

We kept them at arm's length, generally??

Are you forgetting the chances they missed and how pinned back we were before the first penalty and up to the Enzo goal??
Are you forgetting how many times we blocked them in the second half?
We talk about them getting 'extra lifts'...how much extra lifts do WE need?? we were 2-0 up after 11 minutes FFS and still can't win or even draw a game??

We were 2 nil up and we just kept ploughing forward.

We left the space in front of the back 4 wide open. Frequently, they had acres of space in front of us and the defence was left exposed.

Watch the defending for the foul for the penalty on the fourth. Aside from Sarr taking leave of his senses, look how stretched we are when they break. That happened multiple times.

The fourth goal - Porro is left to worry about 2-3 men at the back post. Again, a team has men over on us at the back post.

You cannot for a second tell me that we didn't make a lot of our own problems yesterday and that it wasn't just due to the stupidity of Sarr and Bissouma. If that's what Ange believes, he'll struggle to stay employed.

I think we've gone into the season 4 or 5 players short of what we could've registered for PL. That doesn't suggest to me that the club have any real desire to win anything. In fact it tells me that the only desire is to build for the future.

Idk the insider info. But lets not let that stop us speculating :)

My guess is, rather than overspend for say Eze and maybe others, Ange preferred to keep our powder dry. Knowing that our spending is not infinite. Banging saying 60m and 200k a week on Eze when he's not quite at that level, maybe a smart move or a foolish one idk. Certainally atm with Bentancur out, having Eze might have been massive. Yet he's more similar to Maddison and Kulu. As things stand we are desperate for another midfielder and an out and out forward.

What positions do you think we need? And what positions do you think we were trying for in the summer?

Check out the XG without the pens. And stop whining. :p

I would include Odobert in the youngsters. So 6 is probably a bit too many when you know you are competing in an expended form/hard fought European comp and also want to have a good go at the domestic trophies.

Knowing we had Moore and Lankshear I probably would have gone for two more youngsters max and then two more experienced players.

Someone like Neto and another strong CM or a young fit striker like Delap. (I’ll let others argue over those names)

Thats literally the difference now, we’re turning to the youth + Werner etc where we could be rotating to 2 more with quality, even with these injuries.

Ironically - we’re now talking about adding that quality in January so the chosen strategy we took has to be seen as a mistake.
Ange pretty much threw Odobert straight in, despite having other options too iirc. Quite unlike what he's done with Gray, Bergvall, Moore.

I don't know if adding players in January means that the summer was a mistake. I think it was always going to be the case that we would need more business in the coming windows regardless of who we'd signed in the summer.

And has been said some of the summer business was probably also with HG/club trained issues in mind. That couldn't imo just be delayed and delayed. Better to get that done earlier than later.

Whether you're right or not mate, the fact is Ange is not going to change.

I don't like this narrative at all. I'm not sure Ange would either.

Ange would see himself as adaptable. When he joined, he said that he expects replacements to do the role in their own way. He implied that there is not just one way to play in his system. An example is Ange not expecting Davies to play like VDV at LCB. Ben got to play it his own way.

Something is lost in translation. It could even be that Ange is too loose rather than too rigid in his system. Perhaps he is leaving his players too much freedom, and to many opportunities to use their brains. Perhaps they have too much freedom.

On a point of language I think you're right and I should've articulated myself better.

He does indeed change things up, but within the principles of the style he believes in football-wise.

Your point of freedom is an interesting one. It is possible that we need a couple of smarter players in that regard? I think right now the details are costing us (injuries, mistakes, fatigue) and it is hard to wade through them all. We could do with a bit of good ol' fashioned luck TBH.

Just to clarify, when I say he won't change, I mean anyone who believes after 18 months he will go through a period of time setting us up 5-3-2 or 4-2-3-1 or 3-5-2, countering and what-not, is fooling themselves IMO.

I think we wanted a winger. We ended up with Odobert over Neto.

We gambled on the striker back ups being Son, Richy and Lankshear. None have worked. We need to cut our losses on Richy and bring in someone who will bang the door down to get 25 games a season and be able to come on after 70 mins and do the dirty work to rest Solanke.

We need a leader in the middle. Taylor gave so many soft fouls to Chelsea yesterday and not one of our players made his life difficult.

Son is off it and too ‘nice’, Maddison isn’t being selected, and Cuti isn’t really a communicator. We need to identify a vocal leader who will be ripping shreds off people if they aren’t tracking or not putting a shift in. Even someone with a slightly lower skill set but that will elevate others would be good. I wonder if we missed out on someone like Mctominay - I know many will scoff at that - but fun fact - he would probably scoff at joining us. He’s done great since getting out of Man U.

Why didn’t they get better chances then?
