I might agree if he wasn't even on the bench. But what subs are used depends on a lot of things in addition to how highly the manager rates a youngster on the bench. How the game develops, if we need a goal or if we need to hang on, if we need a dribbler/winger or if we need a possession player, if players get injured, how well the players on the pitch perform and so and so on.

Do you remember Tom Carroll being brought on against West Ham away last season? Not because it was an easy game for him to get minutes in, but because we needed a player like him on the pitch the way the game developed.

That decision actually made sense to me.

Teams park the bus, we're desperate for a goal, bring on a good crosser as the full back forcing them to either put pressure on him thus allowing Lennon some more space or allowing Bentley an open cross. Beckham somewhat similarly Essentially played as a full back at Real in periods of games when they had some super attacking Brazilian right back.

Moving Lennon back to full back to move Walker forward however, I can't see the point in that at all.

Don't know much about Ince, but the Mirror is bandying about the thought of use replacing him with Townsend. Watched the youtube vid which makes him look pretty good for £8m:

That's my general train of thought. Younger, more direct, more versatile, more likely to impact on a game.


Plus if we bring in some of the players we are linked with, would Lennon accept 2nd choice in a WC year?

I think it also helped having Naughton play behind him. Walker doesn't always have the best understanding of when to run down the line or when to play the ball in behind. Thought Naughton did a great job tonight of weighting his passes well for Townsend to run onto.

Yup. Much better link up play between them than Kyle/Azza.

I know its the Andros thread, but re:Naughton tonight, thats the difference when the lad gets to play in his more natural position. Was harsh to judge him on his LB appearances as I dont think its his best position.

Didn't hurt having Soldado and Paulinho rushing into pockets of space. Townsend pretty much bossed it on the right side.

Excellent game from Andros. A joy to watch.

Might be the worst team we come up against this season, but you can only crush what's in front of you. Townsend looked much more mature than he did in pre-season, passing the ball, getting involved in one-twos, looking up and finding team mates. Well done.

Would be somewhat strange to sell him after that. I think we should be able to tell him that at the very least he will start every EL group stage game and the carling cup games as well as being an impact player in the league.

if he finds consistency, then you will be fully entitled, along with a few others...I'd personally be delighted to be proven wrong with both him and Rose...
