And I'd have thought by now that you knew Android is just the software...so no, it's not the beauty of Android at all. HTC could turn around tomorrow and say they're shipping with Windows OS, which wouldn't change how the phone is made, would it?

That of course is another plus for Apple - the hardware and the software is made by the same people. That's the reason why you'll never get tighter integration from any other phone / tablet / computer and one of the main reasons I buy Apple gear.

Of course it's the beauty of Android. It means phone manufacturers can make the phone how ever they want whilst still using Android. You think HTC and Samsung just take the code straight off Android's website and just stick it straight on the phones without doing anything? Never heard of HTC Sense or Samsung TouchWiz? The software is customised for the phone, however it's all based on Android so you get the best of both worlds as you get Android and whatever the manufacturers have to offer.

You can accuse me of hating Apple as much as you want, but if they made better phones that were worth their money then I'd buy them. I don't care who makes the phone, it's just the iPhone is not up to the same standard shown by other smartphones these days. During the days of the iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4, I would have had to agree with you, however Apple's reputation is declining in favour of other companies.

You specifically spoke about the beauty of hardware - "anodised aluminium frame". That is not Android. I don't care how much a phone company might modify it, it's still software and not hardware.

I was talking about how it's great how you can get Android on all different devices, from which you'll find one that suits your exact needs. If you're one of those who care more about the design and feel for the phone then there's an Android for you. My grandmother just called me who has never had a smartphone or a computer before but has just been given a basic Android and she said she has no idea how to use it, so I'm going to need to set it up for her next time I see her and show her how to use it, which I'm confident I will be able to because it's simple and I will customise it for her in a way that's easy to understand and show her how to use what she needs. She doesn't even know how to text. If she had bought an S4, it may have been simpler as there is a special 'easy mode' (pictured below) on the S4, however she does not need a phone anywhere near that good.

Is it declining?

They top all the customer satisfaction surveys, sell more laptops than any other manufacturer annually, have the lions share of the tablet and digital music player market, and take home most of the profit in the smartphone industry.

I've been working primarily on Apple machines since the late 90's and I'd argue their reputation has never been higher.

Hats of to google in enabling their software to be used on such a wide market of products but to say the performance it on level with software built for specific hardware holds no truth. As mentioned, apple hold the majority of the market when it comes to customer satifaction, tablets and laptop sales. Not forgetting the obvious share in the phone and music market. Their products do run very well for the specific hardware it has been designed to run on. Same for their Mac's. You can only upgrade the memory for a reason.
 
I've just gone back to the iPhone 5 after having an Android (iPhone 3 before that) and I am so glad to have done so. The battery life is many times better, it fits in my trouser pocket without looking obvious and, best of all, it just works right out of the box. I'm not a geeky tekkie-type so I don't want to fiddle with the settings all the time. I use my phone for making calls (shocker!), texts and email mostly and it does what I want it to when I want it to. It doesn't get tied up nearly as often, the camera is plenty good enough and did I mention battery length? Sure it may not be as sexy as the new Android phones but it's "user-bility" is exactly what I need. I'm not a fan of paying for features that I will never use.
 
Something else I've discovered since getting an Android tablet is that the apps don't quite have the same finesse.

A good example is something like Airvideo - a reasonably cheap IOS app that transcodes my videos from my media centre on the fly to my phone. No matter where I am or what my connection speed, the app will detect it and alter the quality to suit. The Android equivalents just don't do the job as well. I have to manually set the transcoding settings to get the max available and many videos are choppy/laggy even on a top of the range tablet.

The Hilton app is worse than useless, Tapatalk is meh and VNC/RDP apps just aren't as easy to use (they work, but just not quite as well).

I do like having local file storage, I just wish more apps would default to the same location though.
 
Missus has a Nexus. Might have widgets but doesn't compare to Apple UI and experience. Content wise, Apple still ahead in terms of matching that experience with the apps available.
 
So the 5s is on the verge of being released. As mentioned, my contract has ended already so I'm on a rolling contract with the iPhone4 (and happy with it). I've held out from buying the HTC One and am now tempted by the 5s (particularly as it has 4G and is apparently faster than the 5. That said, im wondering whether to wait for the 6... May try and get a 12 month contract...

On a side note, never used Siri - is it any good for the non US market?

I've had my 5 for a year and the only time I use Siri is to ask him what time Spurs kick off/next game etc lol... I completely forget to use it.. probably because you're only ever gonna use it at home (nobody wants to be that weirdo asking their phones questions in public!)

Apple have gone down the route of trying to capture the mass market with a cheaper product. Bit like Ferrari creating an everyday car. Good for short term sales, bad for maintaining their luxury market leader image. Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave.

As for the 5s... again another disappointment. Basically the same phone but with an added 'function' to unlock your phone. Nothing worth shouting about.
 
Hmm, never thought of it like that. So they'd know your fingerprints and your location...

I have to say though that the phone looks very nice from the clips (well, the gold one particularly).

It does have a faster processor too and improved camera. I'm under no illusion that the HTC One and Samsung are probably still the better phone but I prefer to IOS.

For the record lenjay - I prefer a PC :D
