Trump going to get himself bumped off with the entertainment tariffs, even his fans won't allow his mentalism to impact their downtime. Sooner someone puts a slug between his eyes the better

Trump says ‘we just want to be friends’ as Canada PM torpedoes 51st state idea

Carney returned the praise, telling Trump he was a “transformational president” with a strong focus on the economy. But he shot down any idea that Canada might accede to joining the US as the 51st state – a proposal again floated by Trump in the meeting.

“As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale,” Carney told Trump.

“That’s true,” said Trump.

“Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign … it’s not for sale,” said Carney. “Won’t be for sale, ever.”

“Never say never,” said Trump. Carney smiled and mouthed “never, never, never, never.”

It is good to see that Carney has sat side by side with Trump and gently said that he rules out Canada ever becoming a U.S. state

And for Trump to stop referring to it as part of the US

Trumps refusal to accept Canada doesn’t want to be part of the US should be taken as a direct threat

Wouldn’t surprise me if in the background Canada is having to draw up war plans in case of invasion. It would be the responsible thing to do.

My personal guess is the level of absurdity and lack of any political understanding or decorum - that we have seen in Trumps second term shows how much Trump misses Pence.

I think Pence as an elder statesman probably did a lot to control Trumps impulses. I think Pence probably put up with a lot of ridiculous crap on a day-to-day basis. And he knew how to divert Trumps attention and babysit his impulses.

Vance on the other hand – being much younger than Trump, with less political clout to his name... is probably deferential. Or worse yet agrees with the crap he sprouts.

There has to be a confliction in their partnership too because didn't Vance say he hated Trump a few years back?

I can't help but laugh when all the republican politicians were calling him a nut job are now his best mates. I reckon they think Trump will pick the next republican to run for president so better get on his good side

Be careful what you wish for, Vance would be no better, possibly worse.

Vance could potentially be worse idealogicaally but if there is a democratic system left in place this whole things falls apart.

This is about Trump. It is a personality cult. As and when he dies/retires/whatever the coalition that follows him disintegrates to a significant extent.

People don't like Vance, they won't blindly vote for him (or any other individual) in the same way that they have Trump.

That isn't to say the whole political window hasn't been permanently shifted, perhaps/probably broken in its traditional constitutional form, but without Trump as a figurehead, unless a full on authoritarian abolishment of democracy happens, then the pendulum starts swinging again.

It Trump dies tomorrow Vance has almost 4 years in power. He will do as much damage if not more than Trump in that time. Trump won't be back in 4 years and neither will Vance. The only real hope to limit the damage either will do is the mid terms. It's looking like the Republican vote could see a large drop looking at current polls. But even that is a couple of years off.

Don't disagree but think even if Trump died tomorrow Vance wouldn't have the snivelling, sycophantic unity support of the cabinet that tump has and so things would start breaking down almost immediately. Lots more people would raise their heads because the risk of being primaried by Vance wouldn't be the same as for Trump etc.

Yes a lot of damage could be, would be done, by Vance but it would be a melting snowball IMO.
