Alejo Véliz

Great for him to get his first goal for Espanyol. Even greater that it was the game winner late in stoppage time that involved good skill from him to score.

I hope he gets a consistent run of games to develop footbalistically and comes back challenging for the backup spot to Solanke, or even pushing Solanke for the starting CF spot.

Good early game, seems to be getting starts and full 90

brick team, so they depend on him and he has to work his nuts off ...

So far so good loan wise ..

That’s the kind of loan he can learn loads from
When I saw Scarlett going to Oxford who suddenly have the joint top scorer i have to feel he is jinxed

Interesting to read what Graham Hunter had to say about him:

“For Veliz, people need to understand, he’s a country boy, a country boy who was playing for not quite a village team when Rosario spotted him and took him to one of Argentina’s big, certainly passionate cities. He didn’t spend long there and was recruited by Spurs and they’ve given him – my memory tells me it’s a contract until 2029, because they think that highly of him.

“I saw him at Spurs last season scoring at Brighton, he took three attempts to finish a goal because of jitteriness or nerves, but our producer who is watching this now [Veliz’s late winner for Espanyol], who is a massive Espanyol fan. I said to him at the beginning of the season after game week one, and he agreed I’m not taking credit, Veliz has got it, he’s got the movement, he’s got the aggression. He has a certain something that means that occasionally he’ll try things and you’re like ‘no’, I think he could be a 16 or 17 goal [striker] this season. Which is a big ask, I know I might be wrong, but what I see in him are the special elements about judgement, about movement, about being able to hold players off.
Raw, raw as a farm boy – partially because he is a country boy, but they have an exciting footballer.”

he looks stockier in the video and good header for the first goal too.
that's his job - scoring goals - doesn't matter how as along as he keeps on doing it.

Exactly. You always hear the 'Anyone should have scored that goal' comments, but the fact is it is the movement and spacial awareness that presents these 'simple' chances, defenders at this level aren't just falling asleep....
100%
'Anyone' isn't there to take those easy chances.
A lot of them appear so easy because someone with talent has worked hard to be in the position to make it easy.

IMHO, even before I join the forum and not dissing on Solanke.

I would have had Veliz and not loaned him out. As people say, the positioning he finds, the way he drags players (just look at Djed's goal pre-season) out of the way, his link up play...

I feel we blew 60 million on player we didnt need, I would have been Happy withy Richy, Veliz, and Lankshear and used that 60 million where is was need, on players to create chances, especially on the left.

Because even though we have got Salanke, how many chances has he had? Almost none. I can count the numbers of time we have found him in the box on one hand. Our problem has never been the strikers, it's the lack of chances we create for them.

Don't think Veliz is quite ready for that role yet. See the above quote from Graham Hunter posted by JerusalemMan.

We were definitely short a striker last season. If the conclusion was that Veliz and Lankshear weren't ready we had to go into the market.

Even an adequate backup to Richarlison would probably have cost quite a bit. £20m+ would be a fairly low guesstimate I would think. Probably more than that. Better off signing an upgrade to Richarlison than spreading that out over two positions.

Not even sure of that.

Veliz had less that 60 mins of play, 10 mins here, 10 mins there and scored a goal and his work rate was equal to Kulu, until that very unfortunate injury.

It goes back, to putting more faith into the players we buy. Kane had a poor time at Norwich, got his chance and took it.

Veliz played for Rasario in the Argentine league as a regular. It's not like he fresh out of boot camp, just need to time to adapt to the English game... How can he adapt to our game if we keep loaning him to clubs in Spain.

It's fecking stupid.

Veliz is nowhere near ready for PL football. If you factor in the fact that Richarlison is injured for about 50% of the time that means we'd have needed to have been starting Veliz in about 50% of the games if we didn't have Solanke.

I would've been mortified if we'd gone into this season with only Richy, Veliz and Lankshear as options to play CF.

I suspect we'll try to offload Richy this summer and bring in Delap from Ipswich to replace him.

I like the look of 21 year old Delap, but wonder why City released him.

Interestingly, Veliz is the same age. Scarlett is one year younger and Lankshear is 2 years younger at 19.

I hope they all have Solanke's desire. It goes a long way.
