Alan Pardew

Mate youre talkin about something completely different.

Its a totally different subject matter - you sure you didnt put your post in the wrong thread?

Apologies it's off topic, but I've seen it said on this thread and numerous others. I dont think the negativity helps us. We should stay positive for the remainder of this season and the future.

I was kiddin dude

I am of the its our fault if we dont get CL phalanx. Thats not to say anyone is using this thread in any way shape or form to criticise AVB (im certainly not anyways) but it woul dbe our fault - seven points.

I would like to point out that last year we lost a lead, an albeit wider lead, and majority blamed the Manager. Just sayin.

Completely agree

Agreed. I think what you said was completely relevant to the thread. There is too much 'we only have ourselves to blame' rather than accepting this has been a fudging good season. And it isn't ridiculous to suggest external factors may help or hinder us.

If we get our record points total, and get a record for a team not to finish 4th, then we are in a way bloody unlucky, but also have to accept Arsenal got results when it mattered. The Norwich win they got is absolutely maddening because they didn't deserve that, but as a club we have done extremely well and I don't think any blame needs to be particularly apportioned our way. Record points total potentially.

Yes we lost games, but so will every club. Our home performances have been poor, and yet we've still beaten Liverpool, Arsenal, Emirates Marketing Project and outplayed Man United. We have tended to do better against the bigger sides, or away, so while it is annoying to lose to Fulham at home, we've beaten some good teams and have potentially our record number of points. With a new manager and after losing key players. Arsenal should be bricking themselves because facing all that, with a full season ahead of us we can do seriously well. They are extremely lucky we needed a few games to bed in AVB's ideas and signings.

Anyway I've gone slightly off tangent. It's maddening what Pardew has said. But this has been a good season regardless. Even if we don't get 4th this year I reckon we can get close to a title challenge next year.

Last year we played for a draw when Villa were on the ropes knowing that bonuses were paid for 4th rather than CL qualification.

Not the same in my book Arsenal and Chelsea were no where near as consistent in the end. Additionally were given lifelines such as the Norwich result against Arse which we just didn't take. Finally as you say the lead was massive.

We haven't collapsed this season as we did under Harry. Check the form guide and you'll see we're 3rd behind Arsenal and United over the last 12 matches. Under Harry we were in relegation form from Feb onwards. There is no real comparison to be made IMO.

I would imagine that this quote is directly after the game or fairly soon after and therefore in the heat of the moment. His professional pride will want to see them end the season with a nice win over a team and manager he doesn't particularly like and a chance to set the tone for next season with the supporters and chairman looking on. I doubt Mike Ashley would be too pleased being battered on the last day at home by Arsenal after losing 0-6 to Liverpool a few weeks ago. I would suggest that Pardew could still be in with needing a good, positive result to keep thoughts about him losing his job at bay.

I love how black and white a lot of you are being by saying its our own fault. It's always our own fault, if it wasn't we'd probably win the league. We are competing at our level for a reason. As another poster said, fine margins. Every point counts. Some cite the Fulham game. Some the Wigan game. But this 38th game is just as important, and its come down to it. It matters. Yea we could have and should have won those games but we also might have been competing for the premier league title itself.

But be honest, it was one of about 10 things, and it was this accumulation of situations that made us blame the manager.

The Manager was partly to blame for that collapse but so were the players. This season hasn't been so much of a collapse - we have lost 2 out of the last 20 games whereas I am pretty sure last season we managed to lose 3-4 games in a line starting with the Arsenal debacle. We also this year have had both Arsenal and Chelsea likely to catch us with their burst of form when it mattered and last season it was just Arsenal.

A win has us finishing on a record 72 points - If that isn't good enough fo the Champions League then we really are unlucky and I am sure that 72/73 points will be the highest number required to date to finish 4th. Also you have to give credit to Arsenal and Chelsea for their form since February which has been very good. Every team can look at silly points they have dropped but rather than a collapse we need to look no further than losing at Liverpool where a point would have now really sufficed and I can't say I particularly blame the manager for that defeat given the bizarre nature of it. Winning or drawing there could well have given us the momentum to beat Fulham but that is all academic now.

Last season we had a sequence where we picked up 6 points from 9 games.

This season we got 2 points from our first 3 games, lost 3 in a row against Wigan, City and Arsenal (or 4 losses in 5 games if we include Chelsea), then had 3 draws in a row against QPR, United and Norwich and finally two losses in a row against Liverpool and Fulham. Minor blips, nothing remotely resembling a collapse.

hmmmm 4 loses from 5 isn't exactly a minor blip tbh.

City, we were poor and we didnt show ambition. Arsenal was Ade's madness. Chelsea we lost Bale and Dembele just before kick off.

Wigan was shocking but they are capable ( we hope this Tuesday!)

Can see why we did throw them games away, not great, but we recovered excellently.

Small time comments from a small time manager of a small time club. Good to see last season was just a blip and normal services have resumed. What player worth their salt would want to remain at a club who switches off once relegation is mathematically impossible.
