Aaron Lennon

It is indeed great to see Lennon back in the squad, but slightly O/T where does all this leave Lamela?

Hindights a wonderful thing, but have we now possibly spent £30m we didnt really need to?

No way, its a very long season and we will get injuries, we always do, let Eric settle this season

I'm hoping to see him in the central position at some point. Don't think anyone's made that position their own while Townsend has on the left.

Fantastic team spirit shown by Lennon today. Townsend gets two nasty tackles on him second one unpunished so Aaron goes and wipes the Villa man out. Doesn't matter that Townsend is after Lennon's place, the little man sticks up for his own.

Yes, excellent. I'd like to see more of that from others...

Like to see Lennon start the next game on the left. Unless Sig scores he doesn't do much and he hasn't scored for a while. Chadli's not 100% fit and Lamela doesn't apparently like it out there so Lennon seems the obvious choice to me.

Agreed. Against Sherrif, Lamela on the right to give him some game time and Lennon on the left to see if he can play the inverted role from the start. Ade in the middle to see if he is the Mk1 or Mk 2 version. Eriksen in behind as he needs to show he is worth a starting place. Holtby and Dembele behind. Lets see if Holtby and Eriksen can play together.

Friedel in goal, Naughton at right back and Fryers on the left. Centre backs, Kaboul (if fit) and Chiriches.

Rest of first team regulars stay behind and practice free kicks and corners. No repeat of Wet Spam please.

For me, when fully fit, Lennon ahead of Townsend. And i don't think he struggle to play cutting in from the left. Let's face, his final ball isn't the best aspect of his game anyway. It's about him getting into the boxand putting it across the six-yard line or cutting it back.

Lennon has to show he is back to his best before he can even be considered to replace Townsend in his current form.

None of this "needs 6 games to get up to speed" nonsense.

lennon has to show up for games and make his presence felt consistently in order to get back into today's team. no longer a guaranteed starter.

It's great to have the options available, now Lennon has returned.

On his day, he's the best right winger in England and with the World Cup in Brazil next summer, he must be keen to make the squad of 23.

Lennon WAS at one time arguably the best right wing in England. However, IMO he hasn't showed that sort of level for some time and needs to demonstrate it once again if he is to displace Townsend and indeed get ahead of Lamela. Some way to go for the little man.

You would certainly get an argument from a lot about that.

Lennon has been very good but not great for us. He has been inconsistent. I like him a lot but I don't love him.

Andros could be just on a streak but I am hopeful he can be consistently great!!

Andros is not on a streak, he has been playing consistently well for club and country. However, we need Lennon. If we have them both fit at the same time, great for us. It's a long season ...

Hmmn. I guess I should start by saying that I dislike the negativity on this MB, given our league position. And of course some folks' opinions bemuse me, not least the bizarre comments of those who think Jermain "offside" Defoe is a better bet for the premier league than Soldado.

But one of the players who is definitely a "question mark" for me, is Townsend. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong, I really would, but for me the sooner a revitalised Lennon reclaims his right wing spot, the better. Having some competition should be good for Aaron: if we can get him match fit as well, we should regain some attacking "oomph".

Lennon has actually played 328 matches for us in all competitions which is a fantastic total, would have been more if it wasn't for a few niggling injuries that have kept him out for 2 months here and 3 months there over the 8.5 years he has been with us. I can see him making 400 appearance in all competitions which is a great record in modern day football for one club.

i agree with this

Townsend certainly has ability, that is for sure - but whether he becomes the next Bale or the next Downing only time will tell.
And similarly for Lamela - we paid over the odds for Lamela as he is a player that has palyed a few good Serie A seasons and a lot of ability and potential, hopefully he and we can help develop that ability of the next 1-1.5 years.

If we give Lamela a proper amount of time to settle into the lge and country, we could have a world class player - and during that time having Lennon (proven in EPL), Townsend (potential. Unproven) and Lamela (potential. Unproven in this Lge) is a great position to be in as we can take the pressure off of Townsend and/or Lamela if and when we want.

All 3 also have enough differences in their games that they can be used to battle differing oppositions.

I'm with you on this. I'm yet to see it in Townsend to be honest. Lots of possession but no end product. Bit like us as a team. For me Lennon is still a better option but has to be on the right wing. Problem for Lennon is that when he loses a yard of pace, he's potentially finished because he's a bit brainless in a lot of ways.

Lennon hasn't had end product in almost 5 years, You can see that Andros has more in his locker especially in terms of scoring goals. Lennon has a lot to prove to get back to being a regular and quite frankly from what he has shown in his recent appearances I would bet he will only be an impact sub from now on
