This reminded me, I did an online test/quiz a few years back, 'who are you in British politics' or some similar such name. It probably won't surprise you too much to learn that, according to the result, 'I'm'...you guessed it! :D

Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

I was genuinely shocked to be able to find little or no trace of this matter on a google search earlier, despite knowing what I saw (on what I'm almost certain was BBC news) just a few days ago and the seeming seriousness of it. In honesty, that alone leads me in the direction of taking an...

    Coronavirus

I was more referring to the level of 'strictness', rather than the start date. Police it better and make it stricter, it ends quicker was my general point. But I think we're pretty much on the same page.

    Coronavirus

Yeah generally agree. The lockdown flattened the curve, I just wonder if it could have been squashed further/quicker with a stronger attitude. Johnson is a terrible frontman in this sense. Regarding people flouting the rules again I agree, it's on them. The question is, would this have occurred...

    Coronavirus

I agreed with you more generally, though one issue I'd take is that I'm not sure you could really call our lockdown 'strict'. Certainly not compared to the likes of France, Spain, Italy etc. where restrictions were enforced/policed much more strictly (or so is the impression I've taken from the...

I think the fact that body armour has made its way into the situation/discussion suggests we're probably talking about a little bit more than pen knives here. You seem quite determined to deny or downplay the issue, which I find a little bit strange considering your earlier, laudable sentiment...

Wasn't he batting further down the order a couple of years back, though? Might go some way to explaining it.

No it was the headlines, and their PM quotes 3 days in a snippet (though that could possibly be out of context I suppose).

    Coronavirus

I think the reports are slightly misleading on the surface - the BBC has just referred to it as the first community transmission for 100 days, and from memory didn't they import a handful of cases from the UK a few weeks back (given some kind of compassionate exception from standard quarantine...

The BBC are reporting it as 3 days.

What's the logic (or point?) behind locking down for 3 days?

I've done the same and nor can I (although there are a few quotes from security staff, reproduced in sources such as the express and the mail that are fairly easy to find, that support the assertion). Of course, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, and I can absolutely assure you...

Interesting article here from the Evening Standard way back in 2007 (although I think we're clearly using the wrong thread for this discussion). https://www.standard.co.uk/news/immigrants-from-war-torn-countries-fuelling-gang-crime-7171157.html

I noticed what seemed an uncanny similarity in views and posting/debating style between Mr. Lights and another regular poster in these threads. I'll keep it under my hat, but you are right that it isn't you...!

Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

I heard it last week (not for the first time). It was mentioned as part of a report that I think was on the BBC, stating that it's become such a regular issue that border staff are having to wear body armour.

That would be a wonderful outcome. Unfortunately, the reports of large numbers of them being armed on arrival suggests it's likely to be a long and risky road in many cases.

    Coronavirus

I also saw a news report from Arizona (I think) that suggested cases were very high there in near-record high temperatures. That said, I still expect to see numbers rise in the winter. We might just get the downside of seasonality, without the upside in this case.

    American politics

Is this the swear filter at it again, or did you actually type 'gaol'? Made me chuckle either way :D

My interpretation of the term would be that it would have to be relatively substantial to be called a 'wave'. So substitute the word 'huge' for say, something like 'substantial', and yes. In my view.
