We have improved defensively for sure, but it's also true that we've conceded one in the league from an xG against of almost 5. And Villarreal had a similar xG to ours, closer to one than zero.

We've also scored 8 in the PL from an xG of 5.

Performances have been mixed, results have been somewhat better than the performances for me also matches the eye test. And unless there's significant further defensive improvement we have to start creating more to keep the good results coming.

I do hope Frank sits VDV down and they look at the goal conceded today. VDV was flat footed, had his balance all wrong and then took his eyes of the ball and turned his back. If VDV wants to be at the elite level he'll learn from that moment.

as long as its a one-off its ok; sometimes its just a matter to timing

however, vicario's weak parry back into play deserves some looking into imo

The more I watch it the more I don't see how that is Vicarios fault at all, it was a powerful deflected shot and he was extremely unlucky with how the ball ricochet off his hand for that second touch.

Udogie was the one with the schoolboy defending if we want to point fingers. Vicario has his issues but he played his part in us winning that game...

I think we can sometime be guilty of looking for single root causes with goals. As always, we had multiple players not covering themselves with glory. Vic was definitely one. VDV definitely didn't cover himself in glory either. No players should have that much freedom to put in a cross either.

Interesting to see the old Jose tactic of having 5 Leeds players all forming an attacking line across the entire width of the pitch. They became 5 forwards in that move. That created spaces.

People just want someone to blame for every single negative action/outcome in a match.

Perhaps a minority, but most of us just want continuous improvement. I think Frank will use the tools available to him more than most managers and will really use his analyst team. Then he'll bring these things to the training ground. He'll also question his own tactics and try to understand whether there was anything to do with them that contributed to the goals.

We're not doing bad though after 7 league games. 5 goals conceded is only bettered by Palace and Arsenal. 13 goals scored is only bettered by Arsenal and City. We're on top 3 in both categories.

We all want continuous improvement, but there are times when some are overly keen to attribute the fault of a goal to an individual to suit an agenda( like you said). This is definitely one such time, and I personally am beginning to question Vicario but I don't see how you can put this one against him.

Another such example is Romero. I've been critical of him for his brain farts at times, but there are definitely times where we concede and people have gone straight to blaming Romero when there were several errors and collective defending issues. I would suggest the majority of goals we concede are down to a handful of mistakes rather than the one person that seems to take the majority of the criticism....
