Transfer thread

Well, we still have a few weeks to go, but looking very same old, same old in terms of how we operate in the transfer market and that having secured CL has made little difference (as has been the case over the last 2 decades or so).

Oh well, we still have to wait and see i guess

It's an interesting equation. How can all of these be true at the same time?

1) We desperately need 2 or 3 more quality additions
2) Fans have only identified Richi and Biss that are surplus 1st team.
3) 1st team players will have to miss out on the UEFA squad as it's too big
4) Most of the U21s are being shipped out on loan, with no 1st team space available

There is something clearly amiss here and I think it always comes back to the quantity over quality equation. Are we still buying too many players that don't have high enough ceilings? Our squad is rammed.

We need to buy 3 (ACM, CF, LB) and sell 5 (Biss, Richy, Davies, Solomon, Gil). With a few more youth loans out, that would get us down to a squad of 25 (2 for every position, plus say Austin, Gray and Maddison as third choices).

I think the big questions are i) how good an ACM can we get, ii) are we able to get the Richy and Davies upgrades done, or do we have to stick for now.

It's really 5 big transfers (Davies, Solomon and Gil's wages or not being named in squads won't hurt us). I'd expect us to get at least 3/5 done.

Exactly this
I really felt us not winning the EL could have set us back 2-3 seasons
We've won it and yet still feel like we're regressing again as not strengthening areas we need
Whereas United have spent £201m on 3 attackers

Does make you wonder apart from money which is the main reason why clubs travel so far away in pre-season
Surely better for the players to be at home, resting properly, not being on planes, not having jet lag, etc

1) Bayern are champions in their league, have a lot less holes to plug to maintain that position
2) Bayern are not in the PL so irrelevant to us being a PL club

Funny how you didn't mention Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd etc

I could mention arsenal and Saudi Sportswashing Machine. What were the results against them?

I'm mentioning byern because it's the loss against them that's sent everyone into a meltdown.

I reckon if managers had their own way, we'd probably play two lower league London clubs away, followed by one visiting European giant.

There is no meltdown, just people stating the obvious. Just as they have in previous pre season games, just has been said by many last season - our squad isn't that good.

It's funny that what is happening exactly as I predicted last season when Ange was getting blamed for everything - that with a new manager, people would now come to realise a lot of our players aren't good enough. Was easy to blame Ange because people didn't like his tactics, but with Frank in his honeymoon period and not going to take any blame for a while already more are shifting to question the quality of the squad.

Whilst ENIC are in charge our investment strategy is never going to change, and I'm at peace with that - it's wasting energy to be asking ENIC to loosen the purse strings, they won't. But I have to question when people make excuses like the squad is good enough to compete, we just need a better manager blah blah and Frank's magic sauce is going to really take us places - it won't. Whoever the manager is we won't be going anywhere consistently until they are given better tools to compete with the ever increasing number of clubs who are willing to be ambitious in their transfer strategy....

If we get paz and a lb i think we can get top 5 this season. If that's not good enough then fine.

Not sure anyone would think top 5 wouldn't be ok? Problem is, just because you say we get these two players and we get top 5 doesn't actually make it true....

None of us can predict the future. It's just our opinions.

Your opinion is the squad isn't good enough.

Mine is that the squad is decent (would be better if maddison and kulu were fit) and just needs a couple of players to have a good season.

What positions do you think ?
For me another decent striker (not Richy), a LB and a 10 and we would be very good

Yes and thats fine, if you had just said 'We need player x and y and we could get top 5' then there's no problem that's your opinion. But you choose to end it with 'If that's not good enough then fine', as if someone has implied top 5 wouldn't be good enough, which they haven't....

This is where I am on it. Decent-ish squad currently (2 or 3 annoying injuries though), a couple of “proper” players in AM and CF before the window shuts then a think we’ll be looking fine tbh.

If we don’t get those players though then it’s a big disappointment.

How did we get on v PL opposition in preseason so far?
