Joao Palhinha

wanted the other joao but he went to chelsea, i guess this one will do :)

its clear that TF wants to fix the defence and biss/benta/sarr/grey/bergvall all had their opportunities last season but it wasn't enough.

palhinha was maybe top 5 DM in the EPL but he is no spring chicken - i hope he gets a thorough medical before we sign him.

Can't get some of these posts TBH...
1. We desperately need a proper defensive midfielder
2. We desperately need signings to hit the ground running and therefore must have EPL experience
3. We desperately need a leader in the middle of the park
4. We have a crop of youngsters in central midfield who are only likely to be regular starters in a year or two and therefore need a short-term solution until they mature

This signing ticks all boxes... the guy was one of the best DMs in the league for two years running so can't comprehend people raising doubts on his abilities.... I guess it comes down to his struggles at Bayern.... as if we have anyone who can lace the boots of the likes of Kimmich, Pavlovic and Goretska, let alone match their abilities. As for him being no spring chicken... come on guys... he's just 30 years!! Hardly due for retirement. It's just a loan with an option to buy if he turns out to be outstanding and we can agree a favourable contract with the player...

For me this is a signing that equals that of Kudus.

In his last season at Fulham, 33 games , 13 yellow cards and averages over four tackles per match not sure if that's winning tackles plus he will add extra height to defend at corners etc 6ft 2in according to stats.
Frank keeps emphasising clean sheets so Palhinha should still be an asset defensively.

Lets hope his fitness test is robust! From the beeb:

Spurs target Joao Palhinha looked set to take his career to the next level when he signed for Bayern Munich but he has failed to live up to expectations in the Bundesliga.

The Portugal midfielder penned a four-year deal with the German champions last summer in deal worth over £46m but struggled to cement a place in the starting XI.

He saw a large chunk of his 2024-25 season disrupted by injury and made just 25 appearances over the course of the campaign - only 10 of which were starts.

Of those 10 appearances, he completed a full 90 minutes just five times.

The 30-year-old picked up more red cards (1) than he had goal involvements (0) during his first season with Bayer

Excellent business. Was identifying this kind of player as a gap in our squad in the season expectations thread. At 30 and PL proven really strengthens the lack of experience in our midfield too. Will likely improve our defenders and those around him by doing the dirty work so they don't have to.

Provided he stays fit. Only played 5 full 90 min games last season. Maybe that was partly not being selected rather than injuries.

its been well covered by previous posts, but absolutely a player we need - breaks up play in front of the back four, disrupts and then gives it to Maddison, Kulu or the wingers.

30 is a good age, he's experienced, he's got a point to prove having failed to make an impact at Bayern and we get someone for a period to teach our young guns. If it works, we buy him, (Tel) and if it doesn't we send him back (Werner). The approach is good and we can't really lose, having agreed a future fee option.

Yeah, I'm hoping he has something to prove as well after last season.

We've also seen with the likes of Sandro and Palacios that these style of players don't age well

The way many are going on about his age sounds like he is already on a zimmer frame , has only just turned 30 in July.

If you "believe" Capology on wages he is on 10,000,000 euros a year at Bayern , that would put him pretty high up the wage list at Spurs.

I’m happy with this signing. It’s a position we needed strengthening in and he does that.

For all the criticism Bissouma and Bentancur have come under I do think both play better in a system that has 2 players pivoting in the middle rather than just 1 that Ange employed. Hopefully if one of them are sticking around they can benefit from this arrival. Not to mention Gray and Bergvall having more solidity to play alongside

Because Spurs most of the time acquire young players as investments, the sight of a quality experienced recently turned 30 year old is not something fans are used to. Long may it continue, we desperately need this sort of experience in the middle of the pitch....

Bentancur will 100% be sticking around. Bissouma I’m not so sure about, if someone offers a decent fee then we’d sell I reckon.

It annoys me that people call him Paulinha rather than Palhinha.
Even this thread title is wrong.

At the Reading game the Spurs fan behind me was talking about "Kudos".
Predictably he didn't know who Devine and Donley were.

That's another one, Donley, not Donely nor Donelly nor Donnelly.

Sorry about that. I hate people saying/writing the wrong name as well. His name was quoted as "Paulinha" so much I thought that was his name. Fixed now!
