Levy's Plan

Harry Redknapp giving another interview where he reiterated that Joe Lewis pulled all the strings as owner..........
I saw that yesterday, or at least a ten minute clip of it. Lewis was telling him not to play Robbie Keane who he thought was useless and Redknapp still did. From what I remember at the time, the assumption was Redknapp got sacked for flirting with the England job but sounded like was more to do with issues with Lewis (fair enough that's just Redknapps side of the story).

He was complimentary of Levy saying he was always good to him, never had a problem with him....

Part of me wishes Lewis had pulled more strings. He probably had way more football DNA than Levy based on his earlier life in England.

The contrary story here is in the Olympic bid when one of my best friends was working with Levy. Our chairman wasn't exactly complimentary about Defoe to be fair.

I always thought it was a great debate which one of Keane and Defoe should partner Berba. In the end Defoe ended up heading out to Pompey. I thought Berba and Keane played too deep. We needed the fox in the box.

I can see why a great businessman would work with 'Arry and have palpitations. He needed a DoF.

Berbatov and Keane was a great partnership, need to have a look at your own "football DNA".

Defoe just wasn't that great a finisher that was the issue. Keane scored at pretty much the same rate if not more iirc and had a better partnership with Berbatov to go with it.

Any partnership with Berbatov at any club was a good one. The guy was class. All I said was that it was a great debate at the time having these 3 players. if you played Keane you know he would be busier in the deeper areas. If you played Defoe you know he would be off the shoulder off the last man. You also knew Berba was sheer class but not the biggest grafter in the game.

It was just shame how it all fell apart. Defoe had his head turned by Pompey where he knew he would be first choice. In the second half of the 07/08 season he got 8 goals in 12 games. That only heightened the debate. Then we end up winning the cup but then losing Berba and Keane at the end of that season replacing them with Frazier Campbell. You couldn't make it up.

Then 'Arry brings back both Keane and Defoe in the middle of the 08/09 season even though he wanted Bellamy for one of those slots. That's when Keane's decline really started for me. He was a couple of years older than Defoe from memory. Losing Berba was the massive loss especially when you have Darren Bent instead.

I actually have a lot of affection for all 3 players.
