Naughty Emirates Marketing Project - Spot of Compo??

This has always been my point. When the SEC investigated Enron and Worldcom, they didn't need any industry level governance. They are the governance and many executives went to jail. Those companies don't exist nowadays.

You know because of your own job what it means for companies to "cook the books". We shouldn't need a UEFA, PL or FA here to lay down some punishments for false accounting and financial irregularities. It shouldn't be these football governance authorities. Emirates Marketing Project should be told they have to stop trading as a company. There assets should be seized and people should go to jail, just like in high tech or any other industry.

Perhaps someone can explain to me why football is being treated so differently to Enron.

Because me lying to you about my finances is different to me lying to hmrc.

I'm guessing they're going to get a point deduction, say just enough to stay up, and some ban on buying players for a window or so.
They should definitely get expelled from the league though, preferably out of the footballing pyramid. It would probably mean Scum keep on winning for a while, but fudge these cheats - the game will be all but gone if they can go on like this unpunished.

I heard someone say they would stay up even with a 40 odd point penalty... and it would be better if they got a 15 point penalty for each of the next 9 seasons instead. I mean it won't happen, but some kind of long term punishment would be more satisfying wouldn't it?

It's not really a good look if any punishment dished out sees City back as a top force within a couple of seasons - would essentially give the thumbs up to large scale cheating over many years. I think we'll see an unprecedented level of punishment here i really do

dingdongo, their balance sheet only withers from here. They are screwed.

Enron (and Worldcom) were publicly traded companies so investors were lied to and defrauded. City aren’t publicly traded. That’s your main difference.

Enron was run fraudulently to the point that it made them bankrupt. City haven’t been. Their owners have bottomless pockets and were circumventing PL rules in order to spend money that the owners have but that the club wasn’t generating.

If they’ve done something illegal, I’ll be interested to know what it is.

I’m also intrigued to see how this plays out. They’ve cheated on an unimaginable scale. We all knew the revenue numbers couldn’t have been real at the time but this really is footballs equivalent of Lance Armstrong. Forever tainted, I hope they are fudging hammered for this.

Deliberately submitting false financial information would constitute fraud.

Potentially. It certainly isn’t my area of expertise but I’d have thought that for a criminal case to proceed, they would have to show that the owners defrauded someone or tried to avoid tax or something.

Potentially, they’ve misstated accounts here but it’s with the purpose of being able to spend more money through their club than they should have been able to. In fact, potentially, they’ll have paid more tax than they otherwise would have given they were overstating revenue.

Yeah I'd have thought that falsifying accounts in order to circumvent a football competitions rules doesn't meet the freshold for criminal fraud

Here is the bit I don’t understand and maybe there is a good explanation for it. City’s revenue exploded around 2010. In 2 years it pretty much doubled which seemed out of kilter with the rest of the league.

Why weren’t they investigated at that point? The earlier the PL went in, the smaller the investigation needs to be, the less the competition is compromised and the smaller the group of clubs, players, managers and fans that get cheated. This isn’t hindsight. Everyone was calling it long before the investigation started. If it walks like a cheating bastard, talks like a cheating bastard and smells like a cheating bastard, it’s probably a cheating bastard.

I think if City fail to get appropriately punished it may well kill off my already wavering interest in the game tbh

This 100 times over.

I am increasingly struggling to take anything seriously. A lot of my joy is increasingly feeling like muscle memory as it juxtaposes with the cavalcade of BS both financially and in terms of officiating/teams going out of their way to blur the lines of the game's laws and ethics. The last two years -seeing the increasing return of physicality and set-pieces- has been tough. As much as it is hurting us on the pitch, I am almost proud that we have not decided to sign a bunch of 6 and a half foot cloggers who edge the line of acceptable. And for all the money we've spent, there appears to be an attempt to balance books somewhat. The stadium brings money in the right way. And the thing is, we've all known about Chelsea and City for too long, yet no-one does a thing.

I am not holding my breath for appropriate punishment, such is my hovering cynicism...

What you're not a mythomaniac, cheating fraudster?

I'm sure it was all just an accounting error, probably a fault on the financial directors Casio calculator, those buttons and screen are so small.
Will they pay the fines in camels?

Essentially over that 9 year period their 2 biggest signings each window would not have been able to happen.

Your talking about Tevez, Lescott, Dzeko, Toure, Aguero, Silva, Nasri, Fernandinhio, Sterling, DeBruyne, Stones, Sane, Walker, Laporte.

They are a mid table team without these players.

I mean, without Aguero they don't win that first title. Without DeBruyne they don't establish a legacy. Without Tevez they don't get players like Aguero. Yes...the list is endless...
