Who would you want as the new Director of Football?

ausilio is good but i do feel like we miss out on Edu (Brazil) and Monchi (Spain) who found new jobs in the past week. might improve our scouting coverage and have immediate PL experience.

oh well, we'll need candidates when lange goes

DoFs tend to be working for the next coach (and the ones beyond), not the current one. A 3-10 year horizon

Depends on definition of success, success for their club I would say

City under Begiristain
Brighton
Could argue Arsenal under Edu, he was massively powerful there for a time
Freedman was at Palace which saw their greatest period in their history
Giles at Brentford


Most clubs buy for the club and their long term sustainability/spreadsheet impact

Arteta and Pep were still very much the #1. Even our best eras in the Prem you had Redknapp & Poch as the clear #1.

By the fact both were and are hugely successful, but both though bought in by said DOFs. Had there been a lack of success on the pitch they would have the ultimate power to wield the axe. Txiki especially was the ultimate power at City under the owners, probably the main reason they have been successful, even over the money IMO, one of the smartest guys in football

Txiki was brought in to make sure Pep followed.

Txiki was already driving the culture for 4 years before Pep arrived, yes they are mates but to suggest he was only bought in for Pep massively underplays how good he was at his job and how much power he had at City.

There is absolutely no doubt that many a manager has controlled the power at a club, Wenger famously operated without a DOF so not sure he would be relevant to the list, but even including him you have 3 managers who operated at their peak in the PL 20 years ago, the games changed.

DOFs and technical directors are massively powerful, many making the hiring and firing decisions of managers because they are generally controlling the player narratives with the signings and how that functions.

No manager in the game will be given carte blanche now to just go and do as they wish in the market, far too much at stake for clubs now for it

The best clubs have SDs and managers that work in lockstep but the theory of having a general style and approach to playing that remains consistent is what we need. Not only do we keep changing managers but we keep changing style which costs us a fortune in squad rebuilding all the time. We could also set our stall out and have a commitment to bringing through youth players and the SD would have oversight of that area as well and it would also fall into our scouting approach.
