There were rumors on the day that it was to do with a loyalty bonus of 2m that he thought he was owed and we wouldn’t pay it.

Bit of an own goal again if that held it up just long enough to the time when Pool refused to sell Gakpo and City turned to Ndiaye..

Just financially it would make no sense not to pay it.

Maybe Richie felt he was being taken advantage of, would you be happy to go to an employer who treated you like that, especially after he's had bad experiences elsewhere.
He wants support, doesn't sound like Everton were offering it.

Depends what you mean by 'treated like that'?....if it's that they couldn't match his wage demands, that might just be a budget thing, a spreadsheet thing. And it depends how far apart they were.
Richie is at that age where you're coming in as a sunk cost, as a 4 year contract takes him to 33, so worth little by then.

As I say WE could have oiled the wheels, if Richie was having a crisis about his 'worth'

At some point it's not going to be about the money, it's going to be about him feeling wanted.
If Everton are not willing to pay him how is he going to feel comfortable that he will be treated right.

Aye, this is what I think would have been sensible. It would have allowed us to both get Richy off the books and to get the versatile attacker that we really wanted.

Let me take a wild guess...that same agent two seasons ago said to you that the industry was in awe of our business in the last two summer windows, right?
You know, the ones where we only bought one first-teamer and a load of youngsters that we expected Ange to use and push upwards from 5th and the summer when we were blown out and strung along by MGW and Eze..

Bring back Levy and waiting until the last minute to get Sissoko and Njie instead of Mane and Wijnaldum. Man those were the days..

Yeah, I think if it was as simple as paying Richy’s loyalty bonus to make it all go through, eg 2m to make 35m on the transfer to Everton, vs 25m to Turkey…I think we probably would have done it. It makes no sense not to. Which makes me think something else was going on here.

Eg Ndiaye was going to hold out until the last moment to see if City came in. Or Richy didn’t just want the 2m, he wanted us to effectively pay him the wages he could earn in Turkey or Saudi in order to take the move to Everton. And then it becomes, why should we be paying Richy MORE than what he was on with us, or what Everton are offering, to play with them and not us? All the while he’s been going backwards and forwards on asking to leave?

If it was something like the latter, at some point you have to take a stand as a club. Otherwise you’d set a really bad precedent.

I don’t equate this to the Eze situation as much because it all happened over the course of a day or two right at the end of the window. We moved as fast as we could, by all accounts had the fee agreed with the club. And if the issue then becomes ‘why didn’t we pay Richy whatever he wanted in order to leave’ then I think we veer into the realm of just being irresponsible as a club. He hasn’t been registered, so now he needs to leave. We’re going to receive less of a fee, but we probably protect ourselves from other players trying to make this argument again in the future.
 
And to add, maybe part of the calculation was ‘is Ndiaye worth the fee, and paying Richy off, and potentially setting a bad precedent to other players, or actually is Mudryk on a loan far less hassle and maybe a higher ceiling, albeit with more risk attached?’ And so we moved quickly that way.

But yeah, it depends what Richy was asking for. And we don’t know exactly what that was yet.
