Raw stats on a page without proper analysis are not a good way of proving anything , there are so many variables that are not considered. What was clear was that during our run in he was crucial to us staying up.

That's true - it was the end of the Bill Nick era. In fact, we lost the first three games in 74-75 without scoring (all 1-0 reverses). Nicholson went after losing 4-0 to Middlesbrough in the League Cup, on top of losing five out of six in the league. We finished the season 19th out of 22, just one point off the relegation places.
 
We would have been better off spending the summer on the training ground, but it's always a difficult balancing act between the sporting and commercial aspects. We made a lot of changes and De Zerbi said himself he'd go for a more sophisticated approach this season. Given all that, the slow start is hardly a surprise. If the squad had a couple of months to work in isolation, I'd be confident of a decent finish in the league. Unfortunately, we don't have that luxury and there will be a lot of noise/banter around Spurs because of the money we spent and the recent league finishes.

If the players can ignore it, we'll be fine; if some of them check out, it's another matter altogether.

From what I saw, it's clear that the players are still getting to know one another and they're still working on their relationship on the pitch. Also, it's a shame Tel had a stinker, but that happens with young players, unfortunately. I was encouraged by Marmoush's performance though. He may be lacking in physicality, but his movement off the ball and his first touch looked good.

Ironically, I'm more concerned with the backline. Robertson was at fault for the goal and VDV and Van Hecke don't strike me as a very good partnership. I'd be curious to see VDV at left back with Van Hecke and Danso at centre back but I'm in the minority, obviously. I missed the first game, so I can't judge Senesi and Van Hecke as a pair but on paper, it looked promising though.
 
From what he has said, De Zerbi really did not appreciate the trip to Australia in terms of the havoc it wrought on plans to work with the squad over a sustained time

Except that he explicitly said that he had no problem with the Australia tour - not sure I believe him but that's what he said.

And it’s not because I think we’re necessarily the 18th-best team in the league. It’s because the warning signs are becoming impossible to ignore.

We’ve flirted with relegation for two seasons running now (the first one more loosely, admittedly), and since the start of 2024/25 we’ve won just 9 of 40 league games at home. Nine.

Picking up points, particularly against the mid-table and lower-table sides, is the absolute bread and butter of a relegation battle. You don’t have to beat the top teams every week, but you have to find a way to get results against the teams around you. We don’t seem capable of doing that consistently.

And then there’s the football itself. We don’t score enough goals. We don’t look like scoring. We don’t create enough. We concede too many. There just doesn’t seem to be any obvious strength to fall back on.

Obviously things can change, and I hope I’m completely wrong, but at the moment I honestly can’t see what we’re supposed to be confident about.

Can anyone genuinely say with conviction, that they’re confident we’ll stay up this season?

I can say with conviction that I’m confident we’ll stay up this season.

To even consider this is a possibility seems absolutely crazy to me considering the changes undertaken and underway.
To me it comes across as the words of a PTSD sufferer - understandable but totally wrong

But would anyone have predicted we would finish 17th at the beginning of last season? People on here seem more of the opinion that we’ll be closer to the top 4 than the bottom 4 which is just crazy to me.

Ask @Bishop there were a few fans who fundamentally believed the squad was too weak, too mediocre. I had my doubts about Frank, but probably gave the squad a little more credit than it deserved (even now, hard to judge without injury caveat)

I don't see a way this season puts us in that position if we manage to control the injuries. Keep in mind, even 10th-12th will be a disaster with the spend we have had.

But not 17th weak. The home form is truly worrying. It’s not even a small sample size anymore.
