Never understood the hard time this kid got from Spurs fans. He wasn't what we needed in terms of running the channels nor did I think the decision to sell him was wrong. But his most important skill was being in the right place at the right time to score goals, timing those runs to perfection. I am old school enough to believe that the ability to score goals is still important in football. But it seems that has been trumped by players who press well and create goal scoring chances. Nevertheless I wish him all the best at Everton, although I'm not sure it's a better move than Palace.

Agree. In a world of crazy prices, someone who you can pretty much guarantee will get you 15 goals a season as a wide player/second striker is absolutely worth £35m. I have always thought Brennan's not a touchline hugging winger - something he proved fairly regularly at Spurs - but I think in the right system, at the right club, he'll do well. He has a goalscorer instincts, he's calm in front of goal and he can finish with either foot and his head. Good luck to him.

I guess the question becomes was he always in the right place at the right time? His career stats are 69 goals in 291 games so he's a 1 in 4 guy that clearly went through a 24/25 season where he got 18 in 51. He'd had a 19 in 53 season in the Championship in 21/22. So he bobs along at 1 in 4 and can elevate to a 1 in 3. That's actually not so bad for a wide player right?

There is goals in this kid but I do wonder whether an over exaggerated narrative was created about his goalscoring exploits.

I hope he does well at Everton.

Yeah somehow he's now become a guaranteed goal scorer despite scoring literally 0 goals last season for Palace. Ange had a system that guaranteed goals at both ends, Johnson benefited from that. He doesn't have anywhere near that kind of return for anyone other than in the Ange system and for very explainable and understandable reasons.

Yeah, but I think my stats proves he does consistently have goals in him but not at "Ange rates". He's just not prolific.

He's a head scratcher for me to be fair. Like the kid, but could never really get behind him based on the bigger conversation we've had about him.

He's a decent finisher of a certain type of chance, but he can't create them for himself so he's very reliant on those situations occuring so that he can then profit from them.

Ange's system specifically created those kind of chances and he ate well. Take him out of the Ange system and his overall lack of capability is much more on show.

If he can play in a system similar to Ange's again he will probably again score a decent number but without that it's unlikely, he just doesn't have that much to his game and playing the position nominally as a wide man there is always going to be the expectation of more involvement being necessary.

I thought it was the perfect response personally, who the fudge are OHara and Agbonlahor to criticize Johnson?

Had it been Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney gobbing off then his response would have been different i’m sure, probably would have kept quiet.

I don't think Keane or Rooney have any more right to an opinion of Brenan Johnson than O'Hara or Agbonlahor. What because they won trophies that means they are entitled to "gob off"?

This is silly. Either no one is allowed to gob off or anyone is allowed to.

Yes they do, clearly. It’s Keane and Rooney not Djimi Traoré or Steve Finnan FFS! I picked those 2 for a reason.

Like I said in my post, I’ve no doubt Johnson was more than acutely aware of who he was replying to and responded appropriately. He scored the winner in a UEFA cup final and leading scorer for the club in that season, he has the right over those 2 shock jocks.
 
O'Hara doesn't even have the status of Gabby. At least the latter had a football career at the highest level.

Clearly we have differing views on what allows a person to have a view. I don't care whether win everything or nothing I only care if their views are valid. O'Hara never had valid views but not because he was brick, just because he's a macaron but if he had happened to be on a team that won something that wouldn't make his views anymore valid.
