It’s been the same on this place for years. When Toby and Jan were approaching the end of their time here, people were seriously suggesting that Dier and Sánchez, or Dier and Foyth, were more than worthy replacements for a genuinely world-class pairing. I’d actually put both Toby and Jan in that bracket, especially given the way we discuss what qualifies as a top player.

People had already decided Sánchez was better than Toby when Pochettino benched Toby around the time he was renegotiating his contract. Poch was also being described as the best “pound-for-pound manager in the game”. Like you, I don’t see the need to overpraise everything connected with THFC just because it’s associated with the club.

The first time I saw Sanchez I knew he wasn’t good. I had a season ticket that season. He seemed to struggle with the ball in the air. So I had little faith with him. Vertonghen showed how good he was that season guiding Sanchez and helping us remain relatively strong defensively that season still.

At 21 years old Semenyo was playing for Bristol City in the Championship, played 44 times , starting XI 24 times and scored 2 goals and 4 assists , he is now ranked by some as the best winger in the PL, Tel is at a better level than Semenyo was at 21 so hopefully he will mature into a very good player.

PS. At 21 years old Salah was in the Swiss League with FC Basel so not playing at the level of the PL.

Let's hope the fact they were playing at a lower level isn't why they flourished.

When you call Tel a Top prospect then yes you are calling him Yamal. That is what a top prospect is. Yamal isn't the finished article either, he's obviously very good to excellent already but if his current level is where he ends up then that will be a disappointment.

Tel has potential, he had some good physical attributes and a never given up spirit that I think will take him far but do these things make him a Top Prospect? If so then just like the World Class definition the classification doesn't mean a great deal. I personally rate Odobert more and I don't think he's a Top Prospect either.

I mean it's language thing top means exactly that; top, not middle not bottom but actually at the top. Why he can't just be an exciting prospect (if that's how some feel) I don't know? Tottenham fans always have to go too far. Last season Mikey Moore was a "generational talent". Does my head in.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, I just think a little bit of realism is good and that would actually lead to nice surprises (a la Kane) rather than disappointments like Edwards, Onamah and hundred other developing players overhyped by our fan base.

I think Tel will go further than Odobert. I sense a different drive in Tel than Odobert.

I go with the professional point of view on Tel, on Spursplay yesterday Chris Hughton a former full back and manager who should know a bit about wingers was full of praise for Tel.

At 19, Tel was playing his 2nd season for Bayern (won title at 18), played 41 games, scored 10 goals. Tel was at a better level a while back, needs to push on.

Strange to show those stats per 100 touches. I guess maybe it’s trying to control for different teams having different amounts of possession. But it might also disproportionately benefit players whose style is just not to get on the ball much, which might actually be a downside.

Either way, if you look per 90 mins instead Tel comes out as fairly average:

There is a player there, do we know if he will make that step up, if in a better managed side, with a better manager he can cope with PL and push on? don't know, but looking at any of our players stats that include last season (or last two seasons) will not give you a real perspective of what they can be.

Tel is similar to Gallagher is a player I think will do well with a better, more attacking and technical team around him.
