Lack of trust + insatiable need for speed = disaster

Of course, I do the same, but I have made sure I have taken part of that out of others hands by having my own personal pension. In terms of war etc, I live in hope, I can't let things I can't control consume me beyond that

Few of us can control our society we don't independently have enough money to buy influence.
I've not personally been involved in any of the issues I mentioned but feel i have no trust in those in control of monitoring them and great sympathy for those who are their victims.

IMO, the Silicon Valley oligarchs control way too much of our society already and their influence is still growing. For our tech overlords, their endgame is quite a bit different from ours. The continued existence of the nation-state is not part of their plans. Democracy is something to be culled. That they control SM, large swatches of legacy media, AI and all that 'good' stuff is beyond dangerous. We are just peons to them, and unless something happens to rein them in, you may end up just an adjunct of Weyland-Yutani, NationX or Meta Corp. Sounds barmy, but they don't hide their intention that corporate dictatorship is the plan. They spout this flimflam at their conference speeches all the time.

Another angle that needs to be mentioned here is we are automatically thinking we are talking about adults.

Many many people carry traits/ behavioural patterns from their childhood. If you do nothing about it via self work or therapists etc they will persist, probably forever. Repeating patterns, anyone?

Relatable to this thread...Trust issues is one, not being able to deal with authority is another. Unless you tried to work on this in adulthood, you're still emotionally a child in these areas. It's locked in.

SM comes along, and unknowingly to someone with these issues, it is the biggest negative that could happen. Conversely they subconsciously are feeling it's a positive. They can feed it, they find their tribe, their silo, their rabbit hole and they find people just like them, with the same issue. The behaviour then feels normal, even justified.....and biggest of all CONSTANT!.

Look around in your own group of family and friends as an exercise ....(you'd have to know someone pretty well) to see how the roots of their behaviours have migrated to modern times and media.

100%! You could work endlessly on these patterns as well, without not really getting very far (speaking from personal experience). We're all shaped by our genes, conditioned by whatever it is we've experienced in this life, however old we are, and acting it out accordingly (one of them by engaging with social media). Some are conditioned to become self-reflective about their issues and want to change, and some won't. Some will improve their issues, some won't. I find blaming people for things harder and harder - everyone is the way they are for all the reasons that exists for them. If I were Lily Phillips, I'd be having gang bangs with 1000 men as well. A lot of people are born neurotic, and grow up in environments that make them even more neurotic. It's no wonder the world look like a mess when these guys (myself included) gather to shout at clouds on the internet.

I absolutely agree, though! Outside my door, the world is always rather peaceful.

Depends what and who it is TBH.

If I was distrustful of Dr's, medicine and health science I wouldn't likely be here given an illness last year.

I think this seemingly new found "question everything, trust no one" is a massively unhealthy way to live, not least on peoples mental health.
My motto is check, check and check again.
I trust no one online, absolutely no one.
There's only one reason have an online presence, to make money.

Same here re health, on flip side of that though it took my GP 8 years to diagnose a fairly routine but very painful condition.
And not just my GP, two friends with the same symptoms I told them to ask their GP for a Murphy test (pressing on your abdomen) to check if they had gallstones. Both refused and said no way was it gallstones.
Guess what, it was gallstones in both cases.
The surgeon and team that did the removal, top class, the diagnosis was extremely bad.
And do not start me on what my mother suffered at the end of her life, if mum had been a dog the medical team would have been arrested.

But that's the problem with social media....many cannot work on any of that, with that in their lives.

If anything it's pushing them further away from being in a better place, and possibly making their situation worse.

The book...The Sovereign Individual is an interesting read.

Yeh and look, I agree here and thats all to their own circumstances, but it would be the modern distrust to not even go to the Drs in the first place, let alone get a second or third opinion. It would also be of the distrustful to take you experience and label it for the whole system, which would be wrong.

You have people following people selling CBD as a cure for cancer now online, telling people not to go to the Drs, don't seek medical advice, the woman who was the anti Vax who stopped her daughter getting cancer treatment who then died, she was a Dr herself, thats the kind stuff I am getting at.

Never more have I felt that "corelation does not equal causation" needs more air time than now

100%! It's an extremely powerful and addictive drug (and increasingly so), and it'll be nearly impossible to get a lot of people off it, sadly.

Genuine question. How do you define 'media' today? I do not think media in the traditional sense of the word exists. For me, media has become editorial and op-eds which reflect either the outlets viewership or benefactors.
There will always come a point where trust will require a leap of faith to an extent, a sense of trustworthiness versus a list of credentials. Sadly, we are at a point where more often than not, years of study and knowledge is being fudged off for the opinion of, say, a podcast host.

For me, the biggest issue regarding the lack of trust/need for speed equation we find ourselves in is that it supersedes politics and only fully embraces economic return for a very select percentage of the world. It feels to me that the endgame of this equation is usually an enormous amount of capital, power, or both for a very minuscule amount of people, who continue to be divided and pitted against each other via various 'information' platforms and populated 'agendas'. Left, right, whatever. At the very top of the economic table they DGAF about such trivialities.

The media landscape has dramatically changed but the influence that those those traditional media outlets have over government officials who enact policy has not fallen away at the same rate as their viewership and reader figures.

To clarify my previous point. It’s not actually the experts that are the issue. We should trust the experts. But the mechanism for how their knowledge is shared is deeply flawed. Which is why I would push back on you taking issue with someone listening to the podcast host over a news presenter or journalist. What’s the actual difference between them? They will each take the information provided by the experts and regurgitate it in a way that fits the narrative demanded by their audience or by the paymasters.

If anything I would say the Podcast landscape is more likely to give the floor to the experts via a long form interview. As well as being more likely to have conversations with people they and their audience disagree with.

Also why I find it strange that the Fauci story this week would be chalked up as yesterdays news by you and MAGA grift conspiracy theories by others. Because that is a perfect example of how, in the background the scientists and experts are doing fantastic and noble work, but what ends up being projected to the public via politicians, the media and in Faucis case public health officials ranged from misleading and at times outright lies.

If you look at wealth inequality as the example now being discussed here. The focus is entirely on taxation of individuals. From the media, and therefore also the public, there is virtually zero conversation about who controls the monetary supply.

The Bank of England play a far greater role in wealth inequality than rich people who pay a lower marginal tax rate than the middle and working class. But very very few people understand the lack of control and regulatory power the British Government holds over BofE which similarly exists in most western countries.

Fwiw I put far more thoughts on a regular basic in to this and how it will impact society and peoples lives than as an example Fauci telling lies. That just happened to be a big part of the news cycle this week. The lack of financial litiracy from people taking on debt. The inability to save money for retirement.

But what really keeps me up at night is that even people who are sensible with their finances are still getting wiped out by decisions made by Central Banks who we as the voters have almost no control over via our elected officials. Something that if the public understood would have near complete alignment from left and right as well.

Re the social media thing : this is a REALLY trivial example, so bare with me. Late last night sitting in the garden doing a bit of doom scrolling on X I watched a clip of something I can’t remember what, most likely football related. When that clip finished it auto rolled to a clip from a Graham Norton show, which I watched because I enjoy the Graham Norton shows and knew it would be funny. I then went back to scrolling, watched something else, and a Graham Norton clip came up straight after. I watched it. Then went back to my X feed and from then on every other post was a Graham Norton show clip.l.
Now I know about the algorithms and the more you watch something the more you see if that same thing. . But this was the most obvious I had ever seen it. And it took literally minutes.
It really struck home how we are fed “information” even when we might think we are seeking it out ourselves. I really don’t know what the solution is but it is very scary how much manipulation there is in the online world.

And if only Graham Norton were the limit of it all!

More concerning when I have a conversation with my wife about, example, needing a new hose for the garden, and then I am getting adverts for a new hose.
