That said, I don't think a healthy dose of realism would go amiss. As things stand, I think our ceiling is around mid-table as long as we have the current crop of forwards. We've also conceded around 60 league goals in each of the last three seasons, so it's not as though finishing 17th twice was just a freak occurrence.

I'm definitely more optimistic now than I was at the end of last season, but I can't simply erase the last two league campaigns from my memory. That's why I think talk of finishing in the top four or even the top six is premature. I'd love to be proved wrong though, and I'll happily eat my words if we exceed my expectations.

That’s not what preseason is for. Leave that until half time of the first game. For now we can be carefree with no consequences
 
For me the squad as is without any forwards signed, and without the injuries of the last 3 seasons is 6th-8th.

Villa are a unknown going into this season with their sales, Bournemouth and Sunderland will in all probability struggle with being in Europe, Saudi Sportswashing Machine are a mess, Iraola with Europe means there is the potential for Liverpool to be decimated by injuries in the same way we have been, City have a new manager, same Chelsea.

This season has got all the potential to be similar to 15/16, if we get both a LW and CF i don’t think it’s delusional to suggest top 5.

From De Zerbi's recent words, I would be flabbergasted if the season begins with the attacking part of the squad as is.

New manager bounce thing is a load of gonads I think. It is just that teams sack managers who are doing really badly with a set of players who are better than the manager is getting out of them (I.e. Frank) and the new manager gets the players playing to their actual expected standard.

I’d be surprised if we don’t finish in the top 6 or 7 with no Europe to worry about. I’ve not looked at the point or league finish spreads yet but I suspect I’ll be a buyer this season and not a big seller like I was last season

This is it, put 2 top quality players in up top and I think this puts us in the same mix as about half a dozen clubs who will finish anywhere from 3rd to 9th

I’d be looking at where United finished last year with a relatively weak squad
I mean if they had sacked their manager earlier they could have challenged for the title yet they didn’t even really have a Cf for a decent amount of games

Yeah, I agree with you. Absent yet another historic injury crisis, I think 6th is the minimum and I’d be disappointed if we don’t do that. I thought it last year too. With the benefit of hindsight we can see that our squad had fallen relative to the league a bit so maybe 8th was our level allowing for the injuries.

This season though, expecting that we bring in 2 more top attacking players on top of what we have and what we’ve signed, without Europe too, 6th is the absolute minimum. If anyone is more conservative than that, I really think Spurs are going to surprise people. We are spending proper money and wages on proper players. As long as we don’t turn into United, who became a place to scam top wages and go through the motions without a culture, I think we’re gonna be a very good team.

As it relates to Tel, I think he’s under rated generally in this thread. He doesn’t need to be Yamal to be a top prospect. Yamal is likely to be the next generation Messi, and that’s a bar only one or two per decade can reach. Some players, like Kane, but also like Kinsky for example, just take a couple years longer to really start showing out. I think Tel will be similar. He’s not a Dele Alli style ‘naive arrogance’ kind of player. He’s less instinctual and more of a thinker. And I think that’s provides a great foundation but takes a little longer to come through. He has of course been in an absolute basket case of a club the last couple of years.

Specially why I think he has top potential, it’s what the tacticos call today ‘ball striking’. It’s the sort of natural ability that is hard to coach, and you see it in his crossing and shooting. If we can get him more in the right positions, he will flourish. We can always see in this pre season how his confidence on when to attack and beat his man is improving, so I think it’s all coming together. He also has a fantastic work rate and understands his role in the system. The fact that he won the corner against Wolves from which we scored last season, when he had no right to, is a big sign.

I’m not saying I would have Tel at the starter for the season and sign no one else. But I do think he, like a lot of our other players this coming season, are going to surprise a lot of people. It’s going to be amazing to see what they can do in a winning team.

I think if you are taking bias out, have people coming off their hill, you would say Tel is playing himself into starting.

If a new signing was having the Pre Season Tel is having everyone would be waxing lyrical I have no doubt
 
The blinkers on the guy are absurd from our fan base. He's been one of the top prospects in Europe for years, given the situation we were in when he signed I am absolutely staggered he joined us to start with.

By far the highest ceiling of any of our under 22 year olds.

That may be true, but that does not automatically make him one of the top prospects in Europe. It's all semantics, because we all have different definitions of what constitutes a "top prospect" (e.g. I define "world class" as "would make it into a World XI" or, if I am feeling generous, a World XXII), but I do like Tel, and would go so far as to use Bishop's (?) preferred term of "exciting prospect". If nothing else, it's nice to see a wide player go past his marker once in a while.
