Cristian Romero

It's usually an outpouring of relief and joy in the moment, that we've swerved a horrible and painful moment.

But, yes, this is 2026 so the human reaction could be anything
I know how I react if we go down. My ire won't be directed at the players unless they don't give it everything tomorrow. The board should get it both barrels.

If we stay up...this past 3-4 months has been horrendous and it's gotten more horrendous as we've gone until until RDZ came in. If we avoid a fate I think we truly deserve and looked destined for, there will be extreme relief. I still think the board should get it in the neck but not sure I can do relief and abuse at the same time.

RDZ spoke glowingly of Davies yesterday and the fact he wants to stay with the team. Why is that? And, if he wants Davies there, do you not think in an ideal world, he’d want Romero there too?

There is a massive psychology difference here between the 2 players though. Davies has been unavailable for team selection consistently over a 5 year period through injury and even when fit knows he is most likely on the bench. He is also in the twilight of his career and with that comes maturity. I reckon he would play the mascot / motivator role way easier than Romero to be fair. I still think Cuti should be present though.

Honestly if you don’t think it says something about his leadership that he chooses not to be there, that’s ok and we can agree to disagree. I think it says something.

I was making a general point, if the captain is not the most committed, then other players will follow that lead. There’s very likely already an excuse making culture in the squad that stems from him.

I think RDZ’s comments in the presser the other day about tomorrow being bigger than Bilbao is all about the excuse culture. He’s deliberately putting pressure on the players to say it’s your job now and if you f uck it up it’ll be on your hands.

And good on him, because that is the case; it’s entirely up to them to go out and perform against Everton and get the job done.

He’s been a really bad choice of captain.

Again, the exact same thing was said about Sonny from around November last year right up until the day he lifted the trophy. Funny how it lines up with results, right?

No one knows what sort of a captain Romero is day to day. To say he’s been a really bad choice is…a choice. You don’t know.

I can’t speak for the people who said Sonny was a bad choice of captain. I never thought it myself. And to an extent you are right, this sort of thing is driven by results. And I am by no means saying Romero is the only cause of what has happened this season. But I just don’t think he’s been a good one.

But you only see about 10% of what he actually does as captain.

True. I’m open to the idea that he may be incredible behind the scenes in ways I can’t see. But I also think he’s been too often unavailable through suspension. And this episode just doesn’t sit right with me personally.

I get that he has agreed it with the club’s medical stuff. But I think the point for me is, I can’t quite understand why he can’t do his rehab for 5 more days in London. Why does it *have* to be Argentina? If he really wanted to be here, he would be.

I don’t think it’s going to make the difference to this one result. But I don’t like what it says about our captain. Just a personal thing. And I think if RDZ wanted to completely shut this down and truly thought it was a non issue, he would have said different things when asked.

I'm with you and others on this, if it was surgery I could be a little more understanding but rehab? Anyway, it's not about what this specific act from Romero results in - it's what it represents about his leadership as a whole. He has a long list of things he has done that are not what you expect from a captain and looking after his own interests and he is meant to be the leader - this filters down the group, and I've no doubt this is just another in the long list of things that have added to where we find ourselves today.

It's over - he won't be here next season, I'm not going to waste anything more on this subject as it's the big day today. But I hope we've learnt our lesson for when it comes to appointing our next captain. Good news is we have a couple of good options, let's hope we pick wisely this time,...

If he can receive the best treatment in his own country. If he can have his family and friends around him. If he is having this treatment for his physical health and it’s better for him to prioritise this then.

It’s possible he thought he would be in Argentina for the agreed treatment and so thought he would go to watch the match there.

I’m just trying to offer a counter view to the hate thay appears to be prevalent right now. I agree it isn’t a good look and he, as captain, really should be at our match.

Must admit, despite being annoyed at Romero for seemingly not staying around until we are (hopefully) safe, I was far more annoyed this morning listening to Emma someone from the THST board on R5 this morning (being interviewed along with a rep from the West Ham Supporters Trust). It was mentioned by the presenter about Romero not being here and had he 'checked-out' already, and this Emma said she thought a lot of our players had checked out a long time ago. It annoyed me because a) it's untrue - there's been no lack of effort, certainly since RDZ came in and b) it was just the wrong thing to be saying publicly, even if you believe it to be the case, on today of all days. It was all very doom and gloom, hardly getting behind the team.

I agree not a day to air that feeling.

THST performative nonsense like CFT and the like. Today is not the day for any of it.

I think it's been a long time since I saw a lack of effort or trying.

Maybe the players aren't good enough or their coaching hasn't been good, all valid starting points for discussion, but I've never thought they've been dialling it in. We all know what that looks like, and I have not seen that.
