What it will do:

  • Fly astronauts in Orion to Earth orbit
  • Test docking with lunar landers (e.g. SpaceX Starship HLS or Blue Origin lander)
  • Trial spacesuits (AxEMU) and EVA systems
  • Rehearse everything needed for a real Moon landing

Important update:

  • Originally planned as the first landing, but now mainly a technical demonstration mission due to delays

👉 This mission is about making sure the landing architecture actually works.

🌕 Artemis IV (planned ~2028) — First Moon landing of the program

What it will do:

  • Send astronauts to lunar orbit
  • Dock with a lunar lander already waiting in orbit
  • Land 2 astronauts on the Moon (likely south pole)
  • Conduct:
    • Moonwalks (EVAs)
    • Scientific experiments
    • Surface exploration
  • Return crew safely to Earth

Why it’s huge:

  • First human Moon landing since 1972
  • Starts real surface operations and science

👉 This is the mission where humans actually go back to the Moon.

🏗️ Artemis V and beyond (late 2028+) — Building a Moon presence

What comes next:

  • More Moon landings
  • Begin building a long-term lunar base
  • Support:
    • Resource use (like water ice)
    • Long-duration stays
    • Prep for Mars missions

👉 This phase turns Artemis from exploration into sustained presence

Totally worth it. Besides the cheese, which is very important, pushing the scientific boundaries is a goal in and of itself. The argument that we should focus the money here at home only has merit if that expenditure has some alternative altruistic future, which it doesn't.

I think it does, the issue is no one seems to agree what that looks like.

The scientific community know where the money should be spent. It is the reactionary third of America that doesn't want this. This American administration is very anti science. Trump has been trying to cut the nasa budget but Congress has rejected the cuts so far (i think - have to check this). If he got his way that the money would end up being used for military toys, tax cuts for rich white dudes or maybe in his pocket.

Yeh, exactly this, my point but made better. You get loads of weirdos who think that the green strategy is bogus.
