Mohammed Kudus

We had Odobert and Tel needing more game time to develop but no-one saw Kudus and Odobert getting injured right after we sold Johnson.

Granted Johnson may be the better finisher of that three, which is of course a very highly valuable skill to have, but his overall game was very lacking especially in any team which values possession. Plus, he wasn't the type of player to create his own chances but relied on finishing certain types of chances created by others.

If he was still here, we would be slagging him off no end about how crap a player he is and why we didn't sell him when we had the chance.
Some would, others amongst us would just be happy that we actually had a player capable of playing as a right sided attacker.

Johnson doesn't replicate what Kudus gave us. Even if we kept him the same complaints would still be made because Johnson was a non entity on the ball and when not finishing a chance he offered nothing.
true he doesn't but the coach needed to adapt to a plan B attacking down that side.
my take is that johnson was for sale and the club tried not to risk him

How do you adapt to Johnson when he couldn't run with the ball, he couldn't take his man on and he just passed it backwards constantly?

You don't play through a man like that you do what Ange did and hope he finishes the chances but the chances have to be made in the first place and Johnson wasn't a man who could fashion chances by himself or even better a part of the development of chances. We would have dared no better with Johnson in the team considering the severe lack of chances we created generally, Johnson's attributes do not fill that gap.

johnson is good chasing down a ball - that's how he earned his reputation and scored many goals for spurs with his nippiness
somehow wasn't used that way

anyway just having kudus is not enough as he would and did get injured. and we needed to play to johnson's strengths or get another who could do damage down the right. Kudus alone isn't the answer as we can all see now

We still had Kudus and Odobert to play RW. Johnson was in the way of Odobert’s development, which I think most would agree is a more suitable, well-rounded option.

The fact both got injured after Johnson left was unforeseeable.

Odobert is not very good on the right and Kudus getting injured was anything but unforseeable. Plenty of people commented that he was getting overplayed and looked exhausted, which puts you more at risk of getting injured.

Low and behold....

Maybe my memory then - I thought he was much better on the left but it's been so long now fudge knows you're probably right :D ...
You're kind of right, Odobert looked much more effective on the left initially, but the 4 or 5 games before he got injured he started to really look the part on the right. So I don't know whether it was a judgement call by Frank or sheer luck due to Kudus' injury but the decent performances we had started to get under Frank (not matching results of course, but the play was ok) was largely down to Odobert's impact on the right quite surprisingly.

Odobert isn't good enough imo. Best coming off the bench and gets rattled too easily. Johnson has proven quality and stats , even before joining us.

Johnson has proven finishing ability but lacks everything else. If we were a team creating oodles of chances that just work, but we aren't. Johnson would still need the quality to come elsewhere to actually create the chances in the first place for him to finish. Odobert while not as prolific was actually make chances and beginning to dominate games and that is more what we need than a player like Johnson who can do nothing but finish chances that are made for him.

I am not as harsh as you on Johnson for sure but i do agree that Odobert is a better all round player.
