Leon Goretzka

I think Naja had it right, you start with a plan of how you want to play in future and recruit a manager that meets that criteria, over the years I've supported the club we've had an image of playing adventurous style of football and should be looking for managers who buy into that, it's difficult to find such people as modern football is full of pragmatic system based candidates.

Can't imagine it is possible to find a more adventurous manager than one who will push the team completely into oppenent half when playing with 9 men.... and that didn;t go so well.... did it?

He wasn't attacking in the sense of passing and synchronised movement. Its was just a blunt overwhelming of numbers, which wasn't ever effective beyond his first 10 games.

We could have gone for Nagelsmann after Poch, De Zerbi after Conte, or Iraloa after Ange - they would have been better choices

I think that falls into the category of reckless, perhaps positive would have been a better adjective.

But good players are good players regardless, the idea we want some lesser LW player (as a random example) because its Frank and not someone else is abit over played as an idea. Yes he didnt want BJ., but let's be frank here, he needs upgrading on longer term.

Xavi is a player for all styles, a CB would be for all styles as would a CF.
You say a CB would be for all styles but that is patently untrue. Because that is to suggest that all are CBs are able to pass and dictate play the same way Romero does, not true. You could be a great defender or man marker but not be comfortable on the ball.

Emirates Marketing Project have a world class keeper but he is not comfortable on the ball and distribution is the weakest part of his game. Ten years ago Pep would never have signed Donnarumma.

Some strikers score goals and do nothing outside the area, others score goals and contribute to buildup play. Both types of strikers may be top class but depending on the way the team plays may impact on which type of top striker to buy.

We have been linked to a number of good midfielders but none of them have been progressive passers, they all seem to have work rate, engine but none are renowned for their strong passing ability and dictating play.

The point isnt about whats available but what players managers want despite styles.

Yes there are exceptions like Donnaruma and Pep, because he is by far the best keeper in the world.

But all managers want good players and invariably the same type in most roles, CBs who can pass, Keepers who can play etc etc.

Clubs buy players for the club now as much as for the managers thats why in a game where the average manager length is less than 2 players are looked at with data and given longer term contracts

With the world of systems now dominating football transfers are more considered. Go back 20 years and someone like redknapp would have just taken a good player, as long as he fancied them.

That is not the issue though, we require a progressive passer, which Goetzka is not.
Really? He isn't the one giving assists left, right and centre, but he's very often the one finding the pass to the player giving the assist. His passing is more than adequate. A player like him in the team, would allow a player like Xavi to stay higher up, and receive the ball in more attacking positions, instead of Xavi having to drop down and then have to try and get past 2-3 defenders BEFORE attempting to find a forward.
Makes a massive difference. Goretzka is a top player and would massively strengthen us!

I agree that some of the complaining goes over the top — mostly on social media, rather than here. But do you think there’s nothing to be upset about as a Spurs fan at the moment?

Well i would obviously like to see us doing better for sure, but i see no point slagging off players/managers all the time .
The trouble with some fans is they listen to all this gonads from so called influencers on social media, facebook etc and start throwing their toys out of their prams.

The days of the maverick players who entertain has disappeared and been replaced by over-trained robots.

I only watch our games now.

Interestingly so do I, although I put that down to more of the fact that I would be divorced it I watched the amount I watched when I was 25. 😬
