João Palhinha

What weaknesses did it show?
The well known one's. Lack of creativity, lack of ability to progress the ball under pressure. If he has space he's a decent passer like he showed after they went down to 10. But under pressure he doesn't do much with the ball.

That's perfectly fine, that's the player he is.

Kind of get it, but surely that’s like saying a goalkeepers weakness is their finishing ability or a strikers weakness is their ability to mark players.

He wasn’t bought to be creative or progress the ball, he was brought in as a destroyer so surely that’s what he should be graded against with any weaknesses related to that position?

For sure. I think that's kinda what I'm saying too. Not on the question of getting the credit he deserves I think it will depend on how well those others can do at those things he's not good at.

And I think it's fair to discuss those weaknesses as weaknesses even though they're well known.

It's not quite like judging a keeper on his finishing imo. More like judging Ben Davies on his (lack of) pace.

Summed up here

Palhinha and VdV are both 'safe passers' so if there is a hint of danger they will just give it to someone else.

Bournemouth knew this and sat on Romero/Porro so they couldn't get going, putting the onus on Palhinha and VdV and we couldn't connect.

Not helped by Spence being more of a carrier than passer, and Bentancur also being shy when you need a decisive passer.

I don't recall any specialist DMs being particularly progressive in their passing, most do the dirty work and keep it simple and ticking over which is what makes them great in that position.

Regardless, it was Palhinha's first time forward pass to Bergvall which created the third goal for VdV, watch it again - you can't tell me that wasn't progressive....
