João Palhinha

There's always a reason you win and most of it comes from the work you do away from the match itself. I do get the feeling we are doing some good work currently on the training ground and with the player mentoring.

The team are playing well which makes the players look better. Getting results puts fans in a good mood.
We usually start a season quite well. We'll have to see how we cope come december after playing 2 games a week.
Early signs very good though.

For me, Frank is proving how important a signing he was for our club. Didn't see the game, but catching up with the posts tell me that our midfielders are just getting compliments week after week. This week I read some great posts about Bents, Pal and Bergval within 24 hours of each other. Obviously Sarr has been getting plaudits for weeks.

It feels like Frank has come in, unscrambled some heads and reprogrammed them. His expectations on them are very realistic and pragmatic. He is setting them up for success in their positions.
I think all in all the City game was fairly close. Had they taken their chances it would have been a different story. But going to their place and making it a close game is great as a performance. Arguably one of our best performances of the wins over them in recent years, not a smash and grab.

I like Frank a lot, he's doing a stellar job so far. But he's also imo building on what's been done in recent years. And the additions of Kudus and Palhinha have imo been massive.

Although not directly involved in a goal against City Kudus was so important for us in that game again. As was Palhinha.

Part of why I really want us to sign at least another attacking player (winger and 10) is how important I think Kudus looks. I don't want to find out if Frank will make us look "unscrambled" without him and without any further attacking signings.

In the longer term, yes. Short term there's a lot of variance/luck.

Frank seems to be doing what he can, and what he can seems to be really good.

He was definitely less effective than against City but then with the whole team misplacing passes all game on every side of the pitch, even Superman would probably not have been everywhere...

One swallow does not make a summer but then one Canada goose does not make a winter either. Let's come back in a couple of months after he has faced some top teams in the CL...

Thoughts on yesterday?
Been saying all along that signing him makes a lot of sense as long as we also add creativity and ball progression qualities elsewhere. Because those aren't strengths for him.

We did in Kudus, we did in Simons. But then we're also without Maddison and Kulusevski and Simons isn't registered yet.

Let's see what he can do when we're able to field a more balanced side with more quality ball players. I think he'll continue to impress like he did against PSG and City.

Tottenham‘s start to life under Thomas Frank made João Palhinha look like a very, very good signing. When he left the pitch in the European Super Cup against PSG, Spurs were 2-0 up, before collapsing once he’d gone off, and then he played a key role in a 2-0 win over Emirates Marketing Project last week. A Spurs defence that had been horribly leaky last season appeared to have plugged the gaping hole in front of it.

Palhinha was exceptional in both of those games, but crucially, on both occasions, Spurs had less of the ball than their opponents and the former Fulham man was able to focus on what he does best: winning the ball back – something he helped do to devastating effect high up the pitch for his goal at City.

But against Bournemouth this weekend, Palhinha was found wanting for his ability, or lack thereof, on the ball.

Spurs just could not play through Bournemouth’s press at all, and Palhinha not being able to take the ball on the half-turn while under pressure was a persistent problem. Just about every time he got the ball off the defence, he played it straight back to them. Just look at his pass map from his 54 minutes on the pitch.

Fair comment, lets hope I'm wrong.

Best signing of the summer, according to The Athletic:

1. Joao Palhinha, Bayern Munich to Tottenham Hotspur
Transfer fee: Loan

Contract length: One year

For two years with Fulham, Palhinha was arguably the Premier League’s best hairy-a***d ball-winning anchorman, and possibly one of Europe’s best too. For Spurs to bring him back to England for peanuts adds a layer of steel to their midfield that has been missing for some time. Palhinha will not only shore up their defence, but will also help allow their creative talents to shine.

I think as the players get more used to having Palhinha in the squad (especially our CBs), they'll interchange more freely. Romero will spend more time in the other team's box as Palhinha is a better deputy to hang back than Bentancur, and it just makes more sense all around.
