Ben Davies

Definitely agree. But is he worth 1 of our 17 overseas spots?
Thought that had been changed by UEFA

Edit
It was changed 3 years ago

watch that last goal - was ben davies too slow to get to the cross that led to belgiums win? practically jogging there instead of sprinting

Pointless end of season friendly. Why put your body on the line?

His extension just gives me a feeling that we're going to be trying three at the back a lot more next season.

He's probably the 6th-choice CB and 3rd-choice LB now, which means almost zero playing time in a 4-at-the-back system.

But if we're playing 3 CBs and 2 wing-backs, that changes - he'll see a little more time at CB given the need to regularly swap out the 3, and the wing backs will need more frequent replacements given the physical effort of covering the wing by themselves.

Of course, an ambitious club would have let him go and bought a better player to fill that role, but, well, y'know. So I think this is a real possibility and explains why we kept Ben for another year.

I've felt for a while that indirectly he contributes to a drop off in performance from the team when he plays. People end up out of position trying to compensate for his positioning or lack of pace.

I love the bloke and he's been a loyal servant, but he's not a premier league centrehalf now.

He should be given a testimonial and then go and finish his career with Wrexham. He'd become a legend there and likely help them massively.
agree except i don't buy that bit about loyal servant - if we could sell him we would.

Staying at a club for over 6/7 as an adult seems to be rare these days but great to see IMO. Remember Ron Henry playing on in the reserves after being in the first team for years.

It's super rare - probably the rarest thing in football next to one-club men. To stay at a club for the length of time Ben has (11 years at this point), not only do you have to show that you have the quality for it, but you also have to be adaptable (since your role will inevitably change during that time), humble and professional.

There's also an element of circumstance, of course - for example, Davies is a mainstay for Wales despite not playing all that regularly for us. If your country keeps picking you despite not playing often for your club, it's easier to make the decision to stay.

But still, it's an accomplishment by itself, and is a testament to his versatility, mindset and humility. I personally still think he'll be moved on once we get a backup to Destiny, but he will leave with our gratitude, imo.

I don't think they are the same Ron had 14 years as a senior player before playing in reserves for a couple of years then coaching the youth team, Bunjevcevic was only with us about 4 years.

That's fair. Bunje was 5 years and 51 appearances.

I just remember articles how great he was with the youngsters after stepping down to the reserves which assumedly had more older players in it at the start of the millennium. What surprised me was that he actually died at 45 years old. I'm not sure I knew that.
